ROCKUMENTARY: MARCH 29, 1969

Cue the Rockumentary theme!

San Remo Golden Strings: “Festival Time”

#5 – Creedence Clearwater Revival: “Proud Mary”

This band has been classified as Rock Southern Style, even though they were from San Francisco. John Fogerty even fakes a New Orleans accent.

ROCKUMENTARY: MARCH 29, 1969

#44 – Booker T & the MG’s: “Time is Tight”

Back during the McCarthy era, a number of Hollywood people were blacklisted out of the game and went overseas. Jules Dassin went to France and Greece, tied up with Melina Mercouri, and made “Never on Sunday”, one of the great films of the early Sixties. In spite of its condemnation by the Catholic Church – after all, a whore could not live a happy life, could she? – the movie was a tremendous financial success, as was the theme from the movie.

As Vietnam turned sour, the members of the old Hollywood Ten returned to work, and Dassin was among them. He took the idea behind the 1935 John Ford film, “The Informer”, about the “troubles” in Ireland, and remade it as a story about black urban life. The film, “Uptight”, was immediately condemned by “Time” magazine, which pointed out that there was no comparison between the two situations. But the film did well and was influential in black American thought. This is from the soundtrack of the movie.

I remember from my DJ days at KING just how cold the end of "China Grove" is. You jumped in right away, or you sounded like an amateur.
