I guess it's time to trade it in on a new model.
Definitely! It’s time to get that iPad Air. AND ... you did good, because “leapfrogging” device versions can easily save you money and you can still have a viable product to use in the meantime - because Apple devices last for a longer time than others (and “functionally” so).

Yes, and you won’t regret it. I’m like you...I don’t need the latest and greatest ALL THE TIME. I love all my apple products but typically “skip several generations” between upgrades. The continuing software updates that Apple does for a long time on each generation makes for happy customers such as myself.
But, but, but what about my iPad 1 serial number 6? I guess I don't qualify. Stuck at iOS 5.x. I love it
I also have an iPad 1, but I feel that upgrading to iOS 5.x was a mistake. Among other things, I lost the ability to use playlists with video (used to even be able to shuffle them!). Now I just have one big list of all the videos on the device. Annoying.
The first version became obsolete awfully quickly. I get it. The technology advanced rapidly and far outpaced its capabilites. Part of being an early adopter. The iPad 2 still does a serviceable job. I upped from a 1 to a 3. Hope to make it through 2 more releases before replacing.
Do not trade in that puppy! I'm a collector of vintage devices, and can assure you that your device is worth holding onto. The lower the serial number, the more desirable to collectors in the future. Back in the 1980s I bought a box of used Apple II motherboards for $5. I got around to looking at it a few years ago, and sold one of the lesser non-functional boards to a collector for several hundred. It was a low serial number (in the 100 range), a revision 0 board probably worked on by Wozniak in his garage. These were being tossed in the early 1980s by people upgrading to newer revisions. Now, functional machines command at least $5000, four times what they originally cost. Similarly for other machines. The earlier, the more desirable. Hold onto that iPad 1, or maybe let me take it off your hands (I have a 64GB iPad 1).
