Nicotine plays a role in that addiction, but nicotine, in and of itself, is at most mildly addictive, and probably not addictive at all.

I think you've been reading too many e-cig forums. Nicotine is highly addictive. This fact is well established science. Tobacco smoking is also highly addictive because smokers become addicted to their smoking behaviors and rituals. There are other addiction promoting substances in cigarettes besides nicotine, that is true, but nicotine is the main culprit. Smoking can be a bio-behavioral addiction.

Nicotine easily circulates throughout the blood and into the brain. It reaches the brain just seconds after inhaling, and only a few cigarettes can create symptoms of dependence. Many studies have shown nicotine to be more addicting than alcohol and cocaine. Not everyone becomes addicted however, and there are people who are able to quit cold turkey without any problem. But that only applies to a small percentage of people. Your post is wishful thinking, but you can find just about anything you want to find on the internet.

Oddly enough my own father was a take-it-or-leave-it smoker. One cigarette a week at a “poker party” and never any other time. While my mother habitually smoked herself to death.

I’ve also never found any particular allure in the idea of getting drunk. I think wine tastes nice but getting enough of it to go to my head just makes me feel dull, I get no buzz at all. If every alcohol consumer was like me, nobody’d ever get drunk.

I wish I could say I had that degree of self control in all temptations.

So is global warming....

Tobacco smoking is also highly addictive because smokers become addicted to their smoking behaviors and rituals.

It is an habituation, or at least it was until the same brainiacs who determined homosexuality wasn't abnormal changed the definition of addiction to include habituation in order to include smoking as addictive behavior.

When I have a craving for a ripe tomato is it because I'm a nicotine addict? Or just love ripe tomatoes? How about the baked potato I had with my dinner tonight, was my need for the potato instead of rice because of an addiction?
