ROCKUMENTARY: MARCH 22, 1968

#3 – Dionne Warwick “I Say a Little Prayer”

#3 – Dionne Warwick “Valley of the Dolls”

The first song was one of the great Hal David and Burt Bacharach tunes, whose songbook I covered in my Brill Building retrospective a few years ago. Catch how they play with the time signature.

The second song was by Andre Previn and his wife Dory, who had done the soundtrack for the film of the same name. Andre was to leave Dory for Mia Farrow and become a noted orchestra conductor. His 1973 recording of the complete Second Symphony of Sergei Rachmaninov with the London Symphony Orchestra is one of the indisputably great recordings of the Seventies. Dory would record a disk of her own a few years later which received a lot of critical acclaim. This song was supposed to be sung by Judy Garland, but her personal problems caused her to be fired from the picture.
