While the superintendent of Linden Community Schools is calling it an honest mistake, many others are wondering what the veteran teacher could have been thinking when she allowed students in her fifth grade class to try ODouls beer.
While ODouls is advertised an a non-alcoholic beer, the beverage actually contains less than half of a percent (.5%) alcohol.
That was definitely a bad mistake, said Linden resident Susie Lamb.

What business does a teacher have giving kids any kind of beer...or anything to eat or drink?, unless there is an authorized, supervised school function of some sort. And even then I wouldnt do it. Would a teacher give the kids candy cigarettes? I don't think so. It's promoting habits associated with adult vices. The teacher should have known better. I believe it is cause for dismissal.

If they can’t have toy guns, they shouldn’t have toy beer.

Is that the standard now?
Hey the fifth graders survived giving the teacher BJ’s so it can’t be so bad
I don’t think so

When I was in 9th grade literature, we were reading something medieval (Chaucer or Beowolf, I think) and had an assignment to do related projects. One friend of mine decided to make mead out of fermented honey for the project (I think I made chain mail out pop tabs).
On the day that the project was due, my friend took his bottle of mead up to the teacher. The teacher, who assumed it was just some honey-flavored concoction, took one drink, made a face and asked my friend “This is real mead, isn’t it?” My friend proudly explained that he had researched at library and followed the recipe he had found with some help from his parents.
The teacher gave him an A, put the bottle in her desk drawer, and told my friend he could pick it up to take home at the end of the day. A triumph of common sense. Today, there would have been suspensions, complaints against the teacher, and news stories picked up by the national press.

That is very different than the teacher passing out beer to kids

Man, how uptight we’ve gotten. Everything has to be super-official, for dread of the lawsuits and whiners (closely allied).
That said, maybe Green River would have been more fit, except for diabetics who could have Diet Green River.
