UPDATE, 12:07 p.m. ET: Russian forces are reportedly pushing back the press at the scene:

Ukrainian troops said Tuesday that they were being attacked by Russian forces at a base in Crimea’s main city, Simferopol, the Interfax news agency reported, according to Reuters.

“One Ukrainian serviceman has been wounded in the neck and collarbone. Now we have barricaded ourselves on the second floor. The headquarters has been taken and the commander has been taken. They want us to put down our arms but we do not intend to surrender,” a military spokesperson reportedly said.

“We are being stormed.” Share: “We are being stormed. We have about 20 people here and about 10 to 15 others, including women,” an unidentified serviceman told Fifth Channel television, according to Reuters. “One of our officers was wounded during the attack, grazed in the neck and arm.”

This is a developing news story. Updates will be added.

The Russians have no business being in Crimea any more than Hitler did in the Sudetenland or the Japanese in Manchuria when they set up the puppet state of Manchukuo.

Or this... Overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii

Might makes Right...Always has, always will.

I have a hard time understanding on a conservative website like FR that people are spouting the Russian line defending the annexation of part of a sovereign country by a KGB thug who has ruled Russia for almost 14 years and continues to attack civil liberties.

I agree. It's disheartening.

Rush Limbaugh had an interesting take on Putin, his ego, the missing plane story stealing all of Putin’s press attention which he is craving and how that would add to Putin taking further action to get the attention back on himself.

I didn’t hear Rush’s entire take on it, might be interesting to listen tomorrow.

I’m sick of the mistreatment Russians and Soviets have inflicted on the Ukrainians. Yes, I am. They must be made to pay a very high price for their arrogance and cruelty.

“That is EXACTLY the reason not to allow millions of illegal and unasimilated Mexicans into this country.”

Which is what Russia did to Ukraine since the Tsar. And ramped it up under Stalin.

....”All you have to do is put down any weapons and walk out. If you were stormed, you would have all been captured or dead”....

A proposal which had been given many times over for several weeks now. They knew this was coming. ...and they knew that there were no Nato troops in Crimea, nor would there be.

I am thinking Ukraines Thug Government is going to force Nato to act...by creating such scenarios. They want Nato troops to intervene because they know they cannot take Crimea themselves......let alone defend Ukraine.

Ukraine troops simply must lay down their arms and leave...Crimea is a done deal...no getting it back now.

Obama's 'Executive Order' Shame and Blame list only is for just 6 months and did not include their companies, just their personal assets which were already moved to China and elsewhere if they had them to begin with......Further Obama went after big names but not shooting for the top.

Quote: Our current focus is to identify these individuals and target their personal assets, but not companies that they may manage on behalf of the Russian state.

"For those of you suggesting that what is going on in the Ukraine is somehow justified, would you have the same opinion if the Mexican army invaded Southern California to “protect Spanish speaking peoples”, then promptly conducted a referendum giving Americans in those areas a choice between joining Mexico or having a “special” autonomous relationship with the US?"

Apples and oranges. The Crimean peoples WANT to align with Russia. So many here talk about State secession. This is what it looks like. I don't give one sh*t about Crimea wanting to be a Russian territory and definitely don't want the USA get involved in that mess, militarily or politically.

After Viet Nam, Iraq with it's growing insurgency, and Aftganiscrap that will never join civilization and other USA involvements, I'm done with watching too many of our youth come back in boxes or missing limbs or disfigured or families ruined because of our need to be the police force in the World. Let the EU deal with this.

Yes, I know, some say this is just the beginning of Putin's re-constitution of the Soviet Empire. I don't think so. MAD still works for the Russians. May not work for the Islamists, but does works for the Russians who care about their wives and children. Think Trident submarines all around the world, even with Bambi's downsizing. Even the "community organizer" would be forced by his generals and admirals to protect our nation if things got dicey.

Leave us out of this. Let Europe deal with it. They wanted their Union, so let them deal with Putin's ambitions. If we get directly involved, the next war will make WWII look like a turkey shoot. Is this what you want?

As for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), let all those Europeon countries take the lead. I think we should just kick back and let them fight out for a change. Simplistic? Maybe, but we can support them without getting our best deaded once again for a place that has little national security interests.

Last thought: Russia is not ALL powerful and while Putin and others may want to re-build the Soviet empire, those days are long gone. They may scoop up a country or two, but World economics dictate that not much more will happen if we just stay out of the mix, IMHO. Let them all kill each other. No one, I repeat, no one would dare attack us. We still have enough nukes to kill the World 3 times over.

Hold a vote of latino-majority areas of Southern California and it’s very likely that they would support joining Mexico, as they would be supported by a large number of white liberal voters who believe that America illegally annexed areas of Mexico more than 100 years ago. Add to that a rigged ballot and military intimidation of loyal American voters and Azatland becomes a reality.

As for MAD, do you really think that a Democrat controlled America is going to lift a finger if Russia chooses to annex parts of Eastern Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic States - all in the name of protection “Russian speaking peoples”? Putin doesn’t intend to occupy Western Europe, he simply wants it to be militarily neutered. America sticking its head in the sand will come back to haunt it.

You're wrong. The vast majority of legal and illegal Mexican immigrants do NOT want more in, other than close family members. Why? Because it takes the jobs they originally came here for. I've been following immigration and contributing to FAIR since back in the early 90's. I was even a Minuteman for a short time out in Arizona.

The answer: More and heavy penalties for those companies who hire illegals. Stop it at the source. BTW, I watch Los Angeles (majority hispanic) local news and pleasantly surprised that more and more second generation legal/illegals are becoming more Americanized. Never thought I'd see the day. Always thought Atzlan was coming.

Maybe, but I don't think you get my drift. I'm saying stay out of it UNTIL it becomes a true national security threat. Putin may want more, but until he moves on Poland or the Baltics, I say let him have Crimea (which they obviously want). If he moves on eastern Ukraine, a different story, but still say let the EU and NATO deal with it. I'm tired of war. This coming from a big supporter of the Iraqi invasion - even made a slideshow about all the rallies supporting it. See, "With Love and Affection" on the front page of this site.

No, I'm not a Ron Paul who believes we should pull up the drawbridge and let the world self destruct. However, I'm reluctant to sacrifice more of our kids to police a situation that will probably settle out.

You should go read your own Hawaii link.

No comparison to Russia and the Crimea.

I was stunned at the attempt by Grover Cleveland to punish the Americans and reinstate the Hawaiian Queen. I never knew that history.

Comparing that to Putin’s forcible annexation of Crimea, is really no comparison at all.

“Apples and oranges. The Crimean peoples WANT to align with Russia.”

So do East Los Angeles and many communities throughout Texas and California.

“Leave us out of this. Let Europe deal with it.”

Nobody is advocating war with Russia, that’s a straw man fallacy.

The same clarion call that got us bombed by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor and into war with Japan and Germany...as well as bombed in NY City by the Islamo fascists.
