Maldives 'witnesses' report seeing 'low flying jet' on morning that MH370 disappeared - follow latest updates on missing Malaysia Airlines plane

Key question is *WHEN* did this person supposedly see the jet. It would take HOURS to get to the Maldives.
And someone thought to say something NOW?
Muslim country, unattended airfield. Maldives island complex has three (3) airfields capable of landing a 777, and 2 that can take off with full load.
What about that supposed dude on that oil rig that saw an airplane on fire falling from the sky?
Maldives ping.
They said that it was a white aircraft, with red stripes across it which is what the Malaysia Airlines flights typically look like.
Eyewitnesses from the Kuda Huvadhoo concurred that the aeroplane was travelling North to South-East, towards the Southern tip of the Maldives Addu. They also noted the incredibly loud noise that the flight made when it flew over the island.
"I've never seen a jet flying so low over our island before. We've seen seaplanes, but I'm sure that this was not one of those. I could even make out the doors on the plane clearly," said an eyewitness.
"It's not just me either, several other residents have reported seeing the exact same thing. Some people got out of their houses to see what was causing the tremendous noise too."

From Telegraph article comments:
Chris Goodfellow, a pilot with 20 years experience, has the following theory:
Opinion
What I think happened is the flight crew was overcome by smoke and the plane continued on the heading, probably on George (autopilot), until it ran out of fuel or the fire destroyed the control surfaces and it crashed. You will find it along that routelooking elsewhere is pointless.
His suggestion is that there was a fire onboard, and that the pilot tried to double back to the nearest safe runway to land.
He adds maps and past case studies to back up his theory.
At the office at the moment. Does that time make sense?
It is stunning that area.
It looks like one, giant, floating airport with a TON of swimming pools. That would make a good place to land, though. Large chain of islands there that look available. Would it be unthinkable for the 777 to land there?
So.... where is it now? Did they see/hear it take off again? How did it get refueled? Were passengers offloaded? (if you’re going to steal a plane, logically you’d ditch the passengers). If its terrorism.... how come no one has claimed responsibility, demanded ransom, etc etc.?
I’m not buying it.
I'm not at all certain the location even makes sense. Would like to know the direction this plane was supposedly traveling.
Here's the Maldives' location (at the marker):
Maldives is UTC+5 and 2 hours behind Kuala Lumpur, so 8:15 am KL time would fit the timeline, plane must have been near fuel limit though.
I suppose if your goal is to steal a plane, you could get there, refuel, and head for the Middle East. But we’re hearing about a low flying plane, not one that was landing... at least not at this point.
