Any air defense unit that shot the plane down would get a lot of grief. However, I think it’s unlikely the Chinese shot it down, given that we’d know about it, since Uncle Sam keeps pretty close tabs on Chinese military installations and units.

I think the most likely air defense unit that would shoot it down is Malaysia’s. They should have scrambled, but they claim they didn’t.

I would think that after 9/11, while it would be tragic, the shooting down of an unidentified, non-responding aircraft would certainly be understandable.
