Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah was an obsessive supporter of Malaysias opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim. And hours before the doomed flight left Kuala Lumpur, Shah attended a controversial trial in which Ibrahim was jailed for five years.
It was against this background that, seven hours later, he took control of a Boeing 777-200 bound for Beijing and carrying 238 passengers and crew.
But this newspaper can reveal that investigators had already spent much of last week examining two laptops removed from Shahs home.
One laptop taken away is thought to contain data from the flight simulator while a second contained little information. Zaharies personal laptop was not found, and is thought to have been with him in the cockpit of the plane, the source said.
Colleagues made it clear to us that he was someone who held strong political beliefs and was strident in his support for Anwar Ibrahim, another investigation source said. We were told by one colleague he was obsessed with politics.
Zaharie is believed to be separated or divorced from his wife although they share the same house.
A satellite was able to pick up a ping from the plane until 08:11 local time, more than seven hours after it lost radar contact, although it was unable to give a precise location.
Mr Razak went on to say that based on this new data, investigators have determined the planes last communication with a satellite was in one of two possible corridors north from the border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan through to northern Thailand, and south from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean.

A pilot could easily lock the co-pilot out if the co-pilot goes to the head. If he then dumps the cabin pressure, it would be virtually impossible to mount an attack on the cockpit, and the pilot could simulate severe turbulence to incapacitate anyone not strapped in.
Like it or not, pilots have a lot of ways to murder everyone on the plane without any assistance. If the pilot wants to commit suicide, he could follow the above steps then take off his own mask. Nobody would be conscious and the plane would cruise until it runs out of fuel.
That's great except for the other 239 non-protesters on board.
My Mom was being treated by a Muslim doctor, who was ignoring her lymphoma (we soon found a new doc, and she’s in remission).
When the news came about 9/11, he was overheard to have said “Good!”. The FBI took all his records and I don’t know what’s happened to him.

>> Islamic terrorism.
Islam is a war plan.
I have had that nightmare for awhile. I don't want any muslim touching me. You never know when his personal Jihad could start.
Commonly cited as fact, but could well be just more Malaysian incompetence.
Anybody know how accurate "military" radar is at gauging the elevation at which a non-transponding aircraft is flying?
Islam is also a political death cult, so in that sense, I suppose it could have been political terrorism. Just like every other act of islam.
Good point, it could easily be off by 10,000 feet.
No one needs to state the obvious anymore. The truth is self-evident. Don’t fly on an airplane with a Muslim in the cockpit.
