KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- The search for the missing Malaysian jetliner expanded east and west on Friday after American officials said it was emitting signals to satellites for hours after its last contact with air traffic control nearly a week ago over the South China Sea.
Malaysian officials insisted that investigators had yet to reach a definitive conclusion on what radar and satellite data showed, and said the search was being expanded because efforts in current areas have not found any wreckage from the Boeing 777.
The possibility that the plane, carrying 239 people, flew many hundreds of miles (kilometers) beyond its last known location without any contact with the ground has strengthened speculation that its transponders and other communication devices were turned off deliberately.

If not that plane......what havoc could those batteries create?
(Wouldn’t make sense for extra fuel to be put in in China
If any additional was pumped my guess is the pilot knew or ordered it )
I’ve heard it carried extra fuel form 45 minutes to 2 hours.
Reliable source?
But without pilot intervention it would probably have flown past Beijing as it still had about 2 hours of extra fuel.
I would think that the abrupt turns would rule out auto pilot
But if navigation or other locating devices were out. Someone might be searching for land. It was dark, wasn’t it?
Fire would be consistant with that picture that was floating around the net.
New possible scenerio :
So plane catches fire but somehow one of the pilots survived but without having all the technical equipment needed to find where they were going and kept flipping switches trying to get help. .... Don’t believe it!
Carlyle since 2006. Got a decent stock buyout. Since then, we went public. FSL on the stock exchange. Just over @22 right now.
And, we are *not* “a major defense contractor that specializes in electronic warfare systems.” The rumors have been flying fast and furious this week, like rifles out of gunshops bound for Mexico. There are people running around who think we’ve developed some sort of Klingon cloaking device or something.
Any bets this jet is on its way to the West Coast of America?
To detonate a recently loaded EMP weapon that can be detonated at the highest level possible the aircraft could achieve.
Seattle?
San Fransisco?
Or another modern day Pearl Harbor?
777’s don’t disappear. At least not for long. We will find out if the plane landed somewhere although very few or no runways capable of handling a 777 could be kept secret. We will disable the plane if taken for nefarious purposes.
And why so many financial guys have been dying, too?
Saw this on another thread:

Just relaying some information here. I heard a discussion on the radio a few minutes ago and they were talking to someone from NTSB. The NTSB guy said that one of the transponders that was turned off is not that easy to disable (like flipping a switch). Pilots are not trained to do it and it would take someone with a maintenance background to do it...somebody with specialized knowledge. So, it had to be deliberate.
Would lithium batteries make the pilot change course and continue flying for a long time?
/sarc
Thanks Maggie
Very interesting, I just received a battery for my UPS backup, big battery from amazon, said made in Vietnam . HUMMM
OK not this particular plane; the zigzag flight pattern of this plane says somebody was dodging...
plus the turn-off of the transponders and other system needing someone knowledgeable .....
Why not Pakistan?
That is a good possibility, too!
I didn't know a 777 could reach an altitude of 160 miles.
And if you had, would you tell us?
