KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- The search for the missing Malaysian jetliner expanded east and west on Friday after American officials said it was emitting signals to satellites for hours after its last contact with air traffic control nearly a week ago over the South China Sea.
Malaysian officials insisted that investigators had yet to reach a definitive conclusion on what radar and satellite data showed, and said the search was being expanded because efforts in current areas have not found any wreckage from the Boeing 777.
The possibility that the plane, carrying 239 people, flew many hundreds of miles (kilometers) beyond its last known location without any contact with the ground has strengthened speculation that its transponders and other communication devices were turned off deliberately.

Hopefully they are looking for any non-transponder big jets flying around. And they couldn’t possibly make it across either ocean going at low alt because of fuel. It would take a serious operation to get it flying again at all. I’d imagine if it was taken the target wouldn’t be all that far away. I still think it was United 93’d most likely.
The Muzzies have to top themselves in relation to 9/11.
If they have computer techs working on the aircraft they could put in a legitimate transponder code, re-paint the aircraft, and do anything else to make it look legit. Then file a fictitious flight plan to the US and get into the system. No one would be the wiser among the many other aircraft flying on the NATRACK.

MAS in a statement said the previous flight number of MH370 for flights from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing would be revised to MH318.
Its return flight MH371 would be changed to MH319. The frequency of flights remains unchanged.

Transponder codes are issues by Air Traffic Control before each flight, they are not specific to an aircraft.
In order to get a transponder code, you have to file a flight plan and one will be issued.
Or fly VFR (1200).

I think hoosiermama was wondering where the flight originated before coming in to kuala lumpur, and whether it had fuel left over from that trip.
and if they gassed up at KL they would have had more than ‘ just enough + extra’ for the flight from KL to Beijing.
I noted it looks like a turn-around, Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and Beijing to Kuala Lumpur.

MH370 and MH371 have been renumbered.
