I know it may sound kooky, but what would stop a high tech country from jamming the communications of any of these commercial airliners and forcing them to fly to whatever airfield they want?

Until otherwise shown, I think it blew up and is gone, but still, the technology is readily available to China, US, Russia, Australia, Japan, Korea, etc.

Didn't you almost answer the question with the same thought? All the others have the ability to detect the ruse. Have you heard of ECM and ECCM? Let's just stay with a 777 that crapped out.

"five different ways [for pilots] to report back to home base or somewhere, wouldn't they figure out a way to get some message out?"

To which this aviation expert resonds:

Every pilot is trained to first fly the airplane and then communicate. So, if they are not doing that and the airplane is airborne, they're disabled"

I beg to differ here, specifically in this instance because of the reports of multiple security breaches which include 5 passengers checking in but not boarding, a co-pilot who is shown on video and photographs entertaining young pretty passengers and crew members in the cockpit, a pilot who has his own personal flight simulator at his home, several passengers traveling with stolen passports . . .etc.

Another possible scenario, beyond the suggested possibility of a disabled flight crew, given the above listed security breaches, consider a complicit flight crew.

Terrorists steal a plane, pack it with a NBC weapon or a EMP type and flies it over a US City, Maybe New York or DC.

Sorry. I'm just sick to death of the ever changing news reports one after another, each denying the other and I use laughter to keep from crying sometimes.

It's a horrible and potentially terrifying situation. I shuddered just like you when I saw the photos of the families waiting in the airport.

I wasn’t talking about remote control. Can’t you just fly a couple of fighters and up to an airliner, jam their communications with various counter electronics equipment, and then signal the pilots of the airliner to follow or be shot down?
