The primary scenarios of what happened remain a possible hijacking, action by rogue crew, or some sort of catastrophic mechanical failure.
I’ve got the fact that the pilot had an elaborate mockup of the cockpit at his house. Why? The plane could only be stolen by or in cooperation with its crew. Otherwise, some mayday signal is most likely.
At this point, do we even know for certain that the plane crashed? Is it possible that it landed somewhere? (Just asking, not proposing a theory.)
He was a flight sim junkie - known to post in flight sim boards. Not uncommon for pilots to be into flight sims.
Thanks, he didn’t get enough during work hours? I thought it would be like me digging a shaft in my backyard. :-)
The Chinese don't have to steal a 777. They can just buy one. Air China has already done so:
Boeing, China Airlines Announce Order for Six 777s
In addition to the Boeing order for six 777-300ERs, China Airlines also will lease four 777-300ERs from GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS).
You don't understand pilots. :-)
When flying for work, he has to follow certain procedures, and specified routes. Any non-emergency deviation, and he risks his job.
In a simulator, he can do whatever he wants: barrel rolls, loops, fly under bridges, etc.
I realize that Madagascar would be quite a stretch, but does anyone here know if they could make it to there, or Somalia if they flew conservatively on fuel?
I'll write that down. :-)
I saw this plot on a tV show, cannot remember it but it seems it was a British show.
Dealing with the passengers was very clever, but cannot remember it.
Stealing planes is nothing new.
I just read they’re searching the Indian Ocean ..the theory being it was hijacked and THEN crashed into ocean.
Gee, do ya think? Two Iranian a$$ wipes show up in Malaysia, one known, one not asking for a place to stay and to be driven to the airport the next day. Meanwhile the ‘confer’ on the phone with Mr. Ali. Hmmmm! They both use fake passports, board the plane and it suddenly veers OFF COURSE. But hey, no problem there.
LOL
Just don’t buy this one.

I’m planning on picking it up with the lottery winnings from tomorrow night’s drawing.
I heard that as well.
IMHO, I think the plane was hijacked and it landed at a remote air strip in Indonesia.
Indonesia, is IIRC, the most populace Islamic country.
I was just on Google Earth and found a few possible remote sites. Unfortunately, I am unable to take measurements, nor do I know what a 777 needs to land and takeoff again.
If the plane did land there at 2 or 3 am. I wouldn’t be shocked that none of the locals would volunteer this information, considering the extremely high Islamic concentration.
So they pass by Sri Lanka. Does Sri Lankan ATC even notice them?
Then there's Diego Garcia. Would they scramble jets in the middle of the night to intercept an airplane out over international waters without a transponder? Would they even notice it?
So maybe they didn't have enough fuel to reach Mogadishu. Perhaps, then, Pakistan? That would involve overflying India. Would the Indian Air Force notice and intercept?
And yes I know Google Earth has dated images.
I tried to use their timeline, but the older images had virtually no resolution.
I was hoping I could get on the Free satellite search site and run some comparisons.
The last image Google has was from 2011, and I would look for evidence that the air strip has been expanded.
If stolen, this plane could be in China, North Korea, Viet Nam, India........and a butt load of other places. There are so many scenarios possible. Maybe the plane and passengers are being held for the release of KSM and the powers that be are throwing chaff at the media while they negotiate or attempt rescue........ Dim Sum Il could have done it and the Dalai Bama is afraid of the little shhh......despot. Who knows???
I don’t know either.
This is an amazing mystery with almost no known or reliable facts. All we are certain of is this plane has disappeared.
