[ We really need to sit this one out - not our problem. ]
Agreed, sadly we missed any window of opportunity when Barry practiced his “Squeak Loudly and carry a limp wrist” type of diplomacy...
How is it you’re so read in to Russia and Putin’s thinking?
Have they tried accusing Putin of racism yet?
Perhaps that will work in international affairs as much as it works at home.
Budapest Memorandum
It is not a treaty and even if it was, in order to be legally binding, it should had been presented and approved by the Senate, which never happened.
It is obvious that you have been practically panting with excitement at the prospect of Ukrainian and Russian lives being lost to satisfy Putin’s lust for blood. While you quote some obscure politician whose name does not even sound Ukrainian, the fact is that Putin has been fomenting disturbances in the Eastern part of Ukraine for the purpose of creating a pretext for an invasion. Your sympathies in favor of Putin’s dreams of neo-Soviet hegemony are evident.
Power and decisiveness are political aphrodisiacs. Putin becomes more attractive to some people when contrasted to the feckless Obama. Those who might sympathize with the Ukraine are by necessity weak as there is no military option without risking an unthinkable world war.
Nationalism also plays into this situation. Putin is a Russian ultranationalist. That is attractive to many who hate diversity in the west.
Not only is the Ukraine screwed, much of the former Soviet Union awaits a similar fate. Pushing ethnic Russians into East Europe was an obvious move to secure their holdings by Stalin and his successors.
I’m pretty smart, that’s how.
Are you ready to die for Kiev?
Be my guest.
there has to be some place in the middle where one is NOT putting head in the sand OR advocating pushing nuclear buttons! I want peace like everyone else, but if a wrong is being done and it is going to eventually be done to me or my family, then it has to be encountered. I was told to stand for my convictions and to choose wisely on when to get involved. I don’t go looking for fights but if they come my way I will NOT run. God help me to have the strength and wisdom to know what to do!
Don’t worry Muscovite, your hero Putin and his men will be getting theirs sooner or later.
Those people were there for a very long time. They’re not new residents. I believe many of them have been there at least three generations. What’s different now is that Putin is using the same tactic that Hitler used regarding Germans outside of Nazi Germany. That is, he creates a situation where there is unrest, as he’s done in Ukraine with his puppet who was overthrown. Then, Putin, perforce as he’d have us believe, comes to the rescue. Sure, it’ll fool some people. Certainly, his fan club here, the Putinistas are fooled, but not many are fooled in Europe. It’s been a real wake up call for Europe; they see how feckless Obama is and they see how cynical Putin is. Possibly, this will get them to break out their pocketbooks and buy the types of weapons needed to protect themselves. In addition, it’s time for the US and its business to show the nations that care to be energy independent how to do it. We have the technology and must find the will. This will do more to break Putin and peacefully end Putinanista-ism than anything else available, like sanctions. Sanctions targeted at Putin’s crony capitalist pals will help. But it’s energy independence that will beat Putin. Never was the need more urgent.
Where in Russia are you from?
Life’s burdens are many these days...I am so glad I have a close-knit family, a strong and supportive church, and a wonderful community to live in! I thank God for my blessings throughout the day and hesitate to ask for other things when I see/hear of so many others who are in greater need or more desperate situations.
I am not a soothsayer or a visionary, but I can see how things are lining up in the world and it is not a rosy perspective. I can’t afford the luxury of living in la-la land so I probably tend to be more realistic and even pessimistic than others. Oh, well, I know how God plans for it to end since I do read my Bible! :) That gives me great comfort...
Ah, how Ukraine wishes they hadn’t given up all their nukes right about now.
The Ukrainian thugs poked the bear in the eye and now want us to fight for them? We have our own country that needs saving.
The issue is that you seem more than ready to have many die (not you of course) for Putin’s glory. I have followed your postings, and I don’t know what you are exactly, but a real American, certainly not.
Nice try changing the subject, comrade.
Every time I hear someone say that Reagan was not a great president, I want to ask them how they would end the USSR without firing a shot?
That’s all you know? Accusing everyone who doesn’t share your views to be either Russian, Serb, Libyan or any other nationality you fathom to be your “enemy”
I’m not from Russia, doofus, but I don’t want your crazy, inept president to start a nuclear war in Europe. What’s the US beef with Ukraine anyway, how is that its bloody business?
Don’t you think that is high time America stop meddling in other countries’ affairs? Hasn’t it bomb enough countries to “save” them?
“In the current crisis facing Ukraine, however, it is clear that U.S. government leaders are using the Memorandum as the basis for claims that Russia is acting illegally, and that, therefore, there must be some kind of response by the other signers of that agreement, if not from the international community in general. Thus, the official U.S. position is that the Memorandum is, in fact, legally binding.”
we can try to have it both ways but Putin won’t let that happen nor will Ukraine. If we back down, we are weak. If we push him, we are weak. It is a terrible situation for Ukraine, Europe and the rest of the world to be in.
It’s like being in an old Western saloon waiting for the guy who’s observed someone cheating to start the action going by calling the cheater out, the others at the table get angry and guns start going off...only there is no strong sheriff to come set to right all the wrongs.
“I would feel much safer if US troops were on our southern border and we sent home our invaders and kept them out.”
Hear, Hear!
