Bozell on IRS Scandal: ‘Bigger Than Watergate’
Newsbusters.org ^ | March 7, 2014 | NB Staff

Media Research Center President Brent Bozell appeared on Fox News’ “The Kelly File” last night and chastised the networks for skipping the substance of the latest congressional hearing on the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups. Bozell’s comments came after Lois Lerner, the IRS official at the center of the scandal, once again refused to answer questions during a congressional hearing, instead choosing to use her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

Rather than discussing the merits of the latest hearing, all three networks chose instead to play up the verbal confrontation between Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD), making it 99 days since ABC, CBS and NBC have even mentioned the actual IRS scandal. “I do believe that this IRS scandal is bigger than Watergate. And I think if you look at it objectively I think you conclude that” proclaimed Bozell.

Bozell on IRS Scandal: ‘Bigger Than Watergate’

Bozell began his analysis by pointing out that “I knew instinctively that if there was going to be any coverage, it was not going to be the bombshell of Lois Lerner taking the fifth again. It was going to be that little stunt that the Democrats pulled. This was designed solely for media attention. This was grandstanding. This was just an old game in Washington, but they knew that they can get headlines from it.”

The MRC president continued his dissection of the media’s coverage by pointing out that “we knew what they would do, which is not cover Lois Lerner, because they haven't covered her and they have ignored this scandal almost from day one… And by God, they succeeded. CBS did a story this morning, no mention, no discussion -- no serious discussion about her but they talked about Elijah Cummings. ABC did nothing at all.”

Bozell noted how “Remember I told you last week that they had done 22 seconds since June of 2013. Well, that 22 second record continues.” MRC documented how the day after the latest IRS hearing, NBC News framed the story by observing that “In Washington today, a public and startling example of the kind of behavior Congress has become known for and Congress has become gridlocked over.”

Bozell went on to argue that “In other words, Megyn, the story last night was not Lois Lerner. It was Congress.” The MRC president pointed out how with the IRS scandal it’s “becoming more and more apparent that there were serious crimes committed. The only question is how far up the ladder does this reach?”

The MRC president concluded the segment by bringing in some much needed historical context: I thought back in 1987, 1988 with Iran Contra. If you recall that, which is piddly stuff compared to this. But day in and day out, live coverage from the networks. Not a news story at night, all-day coverage to find out what Iran Contra was all about, what Ollie North had done. So, now, you have this woman who comes in to testify. She doesn't even make the news.”

NOthing puts the fear in Americans of any background, political pursuasion or economical status than being targeted by the IRS. One came to my house once, I wasn’t home, and left her card to call her. I was late in paying my taxes one year.

I can’t tell you the stress it caused me dealing with them.

And now we learn that the targeting continues.

The only voice I hear out there is Ted Cruz, who eloquently argues that we should get rid of the IRS. This should be a battle cry for all republicans. IT should unite us all.

I’m sick of this whole thing. I can’t believe that the IRS scandal is getting no coverage. Can’t believe it.

The difference this time is that the entire Rat Party is in on the coverup. “

AND many of the GOPe dirty dogs like Bonehead, no guts Mitch, lame McCain, and many others are in on the coverup. THEY too, hate the TParty and/or any conservatives. So, they also let this continue. Issa is all talk and no action.

Where are the convictions on Fast and Furious, IRS, HHS, Swat teams, Benghazi and all the other small scandals such as Arne Duncan, Val Jar et al???? Makes you sick to your stomach.

Even my own, previously very good Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner is going south on Voter ID. What the heck.

Love Ted Cruz, Trey Gowdy, Mike Lee and anyone else that stands up to these feckless GOP/Dem entrenched in DC.

Rant off.

In my view it was nothing more than political shenanigans, as a result there weren’t dead bodies, and thousands of honest citizens harassed by the IRS.

Maybe it's time honest citizens harass the IRS. In fact, we should be daring them to cross the line. Time to put an end to this lawless bunch.

Wonder if they have her cuffed and arrested, will that make news? They better do it before holder declares their is not enough evidence to convict her or finds some peon to blame.

On any scale, other than media interest, the IRS abuses dwarf anything Nixon ever did or even contemplated doing.

Congress has to start jailing people like Lerner. The media can't do their usual "poor victim of Republicans" story on her in prison without discussing the issue.

If they still ignore the story and let Lerner rot in prison unlamented, at least we'll have that.

BTW, the US also prosecuted and jailed the media in that country for crimes, after the tyranny was destroyed. Oh, the irony...

And that idiot Issa fell for it. He gave Elijah Cummings (Lawn Jockey, MD) exactly what he was looking for. And he “cemented” his “relationship” with his constituents as a fringe benefit because “he gave it to Whitey.”

If Issa let him talk for 2 hours the media would cover every second of it. When republicans start calling out the media for not reporting the truth, maybe things will change. Rinos/leadership just want to be liked by the media.

Meanwhile, non-privileged Americans all over America are being held in contempt and jailed for yawning, cell phone ringing and various other minor insignificant incidents..

But here are insider agents and top government officials, the hired guns and money collection hierarchy of the government, telling the American people to F off, they’re not answering any legitimate questions.

The SRM is busier than a cat covering up crap on a hot tin roof in Texas in August. If they reported all the lies and cover-ups in this administration as they tried to in the Bush years, they would never get a wink of sleep.

The Marxists run the Mainstream Media. The ladder runs up to the incompetent Keynesian Kenyan in the White House.

If the GOP seizes control of Congress in 2014 he WILL be impeached.

If this scandal is to get any reporting at all the R’s will have to grow a pair and cite Lerner for contempt. Then the House needs to appoint a special prosecutor. Tighten the screws on Lois Lerner or the Obama Administration will run-out the clock while taking pot-shots at select Republican lawmakers — which the liberal MSM will dutifully trumpet.

Nope. If a scandal happens and nobody covers it, it is not a scandal.

Exactly, it's not a scandal because the Praetorian MarxoFascist media and their Democrat overlords say it is not - so there is no - I mean absolutely NO coverage of it.

Instead it was turned into political theater and now the Praetorian Media has yanked out their swords to assist Rep Cummings assassinate Chairman Issa for daring to ask questions about it.

And Issa APOLOGIZED for cutting off the grandstanding for political theater.

So, it could be the biggest scandal in WORLD HISTORY - and no one will know, and only us few "Tea Baggers" care about the IRS being used as a weapon to punish the political beliefs of Conservatives. We care about it because we're ' racists' and we hate Obama because he's 'black'.

Anyone ever think that some of the rinos ARE TRULY working with democrats to stop conservatives within? I know we say it sarcastically, but when they don’t do what a sane person would do, you have to ask why. Some say they want to be bbf with those on the other side of the aisle. The rnc is NOT defending the American people against those who are harming us. Maybe we are Ukraine brewing.

What would happen if we had a protest targeted at only the media? Something’s gotta give.

The media will decide what is a big scandal and what isn’t.

Bingo!

After 40 replies throwing sand but missing the bigger target, we finally hear from a FReeper who knows there's more than ordinary politics at play and wants to see changes made--not just by replacing Democrat officials with trustworthy Republicans, but by taking away the tools with which partisans inflict misery, heartache and financial distress on their opponents. Sometimes you need to feel oppression firsthand in order to have the proper degree of empathy for the oppressed, and to understand that a permanent solution needs to go beyond accusations of wrongdoing that can be brushed off by the wrongdoers and their allies.

Jerome Tuccille has distilled this latest IRS scandal into a succinct call for reform--not just changing procedures and policies as some politicians would like, but taking the agency apart branch by branch, all the way to the root:

To End IRS Abuses of Free Speech, End the IRS

All in agreement, write your Congressman.
