It means if someone wants to make trouble with the US it will be an attack on the mainland. At that point our politically divided nation will agree we must fight. When we go overseas to start a war to prevent a war, we end up limiting ourselves due to geo political realities, or we must nation build and subject our men to ROE and irregular warfare. This formula has been played from Korea, Vietnam, and now Iraq/Afghanistan. US domestic characteristics limits us to defined short wars which our leaders are unable to keep when going to war overseas. Result is eventual defeat as the war drags on, enemy peppers us to death with IED and the cost to a nation already deep in debt. In the meantime the party out of power will demonize the war with the hope of taking power from the party in power. It all ends badly for the poor troops who have to put up with all this. Many of our enemies have to climb thru many neighboring nations before they can physically launch a seaborne invasion of the US/Western Hemisphere. Our country needs another Pres Eisenhower who will usher a period of quiet as our nation pay down our debt and rebuild her strength and forces. The US did not become a great power via a conqueror like Napolean, rather it was by letting the powers of the day kill each other till both are at the brink of collapse that we plunged into the fight fresh and untouched. The US should not be killing herself to maintain the peace in the world. Let the nations fight amongst themselves again. Give war a chance. When the US is no longer dominant in Europe and Far East Asia, China and Russia will eye each other with suspicion. I predict they will end up fighting with each other over the EuroAsia regions. In a multi polar world, the first two major powers fight will lose. Be the monkey on the rock watching two lions fight will be the winner.
Bad example. It was Israel's land, and the original nations no longer exist, and there was no Palestine state, and the British gave land for a Jewish state, and the Muslims refused a deal that would have given them this:

Let me get this straight. The Brits take the lands from the Ottoman Empire, and then decides to give it to the Jewish refugees from the Holocaust without asking the Arabs living on it if they want that? It would be akin to the UN/IMF taking over the US after a financial collapse and then decide to return TX, AZ. NM, CA to Mexico without asking the Americans living in those states. Recipe for trouble recipe for trouble. The last 60 plus years affirmed it. Brits screw up and we are dumb to assume the mantle along with all the headaches.
In the 80s Russia tried to subdue Afghanistan. They failed against tribesmen. We also failed but not due to the tribesmen but the failed rules of engagement from Washington and their insane thought they could make Afghanistan a functioning democracy.
Russia can roll over the Ukraine in a conventional battle. Do they have the stomach to battle for years against an insurgency that has sophisticated training and weapons. Russia battled in Afghanistan for years and lost their ass to tribesmen that were armed with western weapons.
Euromadien does not have anywhere near full control of the Ukrainian military. In fact I would bet that over 75% of the Ukrainian units will not fight if push comes to shove, and that many would defect to, and fight for, Russia.
From the same crew that gave us The Dayton Accords....Gee how did that work out for Yugoslavia?
Yup. Jews have always lived in the r holy land , even along side Arabs.
And what right did Arab have to prevent a prior people
whose nation had possessed the land, and who lost it another nations, resulting in subsequent change of hands by nations, and finally Britain, resulting in the prior nation's people getting it back, and which had no prior claimants left from before them,
from having a nation in part of it, which they could easily coexist with?
See http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/myths3/MFroots.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_and_Judaism_in_the_Land_of_Israel http://www.danielpipes.org/84/the-muslim-claim-to-jerusalem
Brits screw up and we are dumb to assume the mantle along with all the headaches.
Not so: the Brits simply were the last nation in a chain of nations to have power over the land, and gave part of back to the only nation who had no prior claimants before them left.
And which would have also resulted in an Arab nation if they were not intolerant of a Jewish nation there at all.
This was verified? Where?Russia did not resume them. They hid them in the Crimea.
They knew the Bear was only hibernating.Russia has gone in to secure its nuclear weapons in Sevastopol, which by the way if they had fallen to the “Maiden” would have shown that Russia ignored the non-proliferation treaty.

“if the West failed to intervene in the former Yugoslavia, it will certainly not involve itself (other than by exhortation)in battles between Russia and the Ukraine.
To many this growing sense of isolation reinforces the need for a nuclear “big stick” with which to threaten Russia.”
What on Earth is the "international community"?
That's something you see on a ride at Disney World.
There is no "international community". You have nothing whatsoever in common with 95+% inhabitants of this ball of rock (and little in common with a bunch who share our territory with you).
The grim reality of the Ukrainians resisting the Russians.

At Ukrainian base, standoff turns into circus

PEREVALNE, Ukraine (AP) Just inside the main gate to the military base, four young Ukrainian soldiers stood in the middle of the road, as if somehow they alone could stop what was on the other side.
They were hardly an intimidating group. They were young and unarmed and didn’t look like they had ever been anywhere near combat. One, the soldier whose eyes kept blinking nervously, didn’t look old enough to shave.
