Putin has and continues to favor the Orthodox church...but not because he’s religious by any means...he has recognized to gain the people you have to appeal to their hearts...not just with a stick....so he’s been building them to gain favor with the population..and it’s worked very well for him.
Even so, make no mistake...Putin is ALWAYS out for personal gain and is fully a nationalist to his Mother Russia. He’s still a thug but he generally does that behind closed doors and out of the political repercussions. He’s had a full tilt public relations working overtime for him for a long while now...and that’s working for him as well.
BTW...Obama time and again has handed Putin everything we see him gain in popularity on the world stage. Egypt, Syria the Olympics etc. etc. So I can’t blame the thug for grabbing what he can while the gettings good....he does so because he can.
