(CNN) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked the upper house of parliament for approval to send Russian troops into Ukraine's Crimea region to normalize the political situation there, the Kremlin said Saturday.
Due to the "extraordinary situation in Ukraine," Putin said, there are threats to the lives of Russian citizens and Russian military personnel based in the southern Crimean region.
It comes on the same day that the new pro-Russian leader of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, asked Putin for help in maintaining peace in the Black Sea peninsula -- where Russia has a major naval base at Sevastopol.

16:46: BBC Monitoring says: Russian state-owned news agency RIA Novosti reports that Ukrainian navy chief Denys Berezovskyy, who was appointed by acting President Turchynov yesterday, has “taken an oath of allegiance to the people to Crimea”, which suggests that he has joined forces with the pro-Russian authorities there. Speaking at a news conference in Sevastopol, Rear Adm Denys Berezovskyy reportedly vowed to “defend” the people of Crimea.

Guardian:
Summary
Russian troops have surrounded at least two military bases in Crimea and approached others seeking to gain access or get hold or their weapons. There were reported to be about 150 Russian troops and more than 20 military vehicles outside the Perevalnoe base, where there was a tense standoff. Ukrainian soldiers drove a tank up to the inside gates of the base in response and around 15 of them lined up against the gate.
The Ukrainian prime minister, Arseny Yatsenyuk, said Russia has declared war on Ukraine and that it is not just a threat from Moscow. He warned: We are on the brink of disaster.
The US secretary of state, John Kerry, warned that Russia could be expelled from the G8 and face economic sanctions, unless President Vladimir Putin halts his incredible act of aggression. He also mentioned visa bans, asset freezes and trade isolation as possible steps.
Nato secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen accused Russia of threatening peace and security in Europe by its actions and of violating the UN charter. He called on Russia to de-escalate.
Britain and France joined the US in pulling out of preparatory meetings for the G8 economic summit, scheduled to be held in June at the Black Sea resort of Sochi, site of the just-concluded 2014 Winter Olympics.
Ukraines parliament has called for international monitors to help ensure the safety of its nuclear power plants.
There were demonstrations both for and against Russian intervention in Ukraine in Moscow. There were at least 10,000 people at the pro demonstration, according to AP, although reporters said some were ordered to be there. The anti demonstration was much smaller but saw at least 50 people detained by Russian police.

Great work
I am curious if any stories are out their of the Night Wolves riding into other parts of the Ukraine. They are the ones that replaced several mayors and city councils prior to the troops arriving. I ask this because I do not think Putin is stopping in the Crimean state.
This is a great example of a KGB operation. Replace the leaders, create unrest and then promote pictures of the old, church leaders and the raising of the Russian flag. Once the mayors were replaced these people had no choice. They remember the stories of there great grand parents siding with the losers under Stalin. I am not saying some people are for the invasion I am just saying things are not always as they appear.
Haven’t seen much on Night Wolves.

Born in Moscow out of an anti-Soviet rock culture in the 1980s, the Night Wolf biking gang, whose logo is a flaming wolf’s head, today have branches across the Slavic world including Bulgaria, Bosnia, Serbia and Ukraine.
Crimea is the heartland of the gang’s Ukrainian chapter. “We are all around Crimea, Simferopol and Sevastopol everywhere,” says blue-eyed wolf squad leader Sinichkin. “Our numbers are not great but we move around fast.”
The Night Wolves will not reveal precisely how many members they have, but across the region they claim that, alongside other pro-Russian groups, more than 20,000 men can be quickly mobilised. “I am sure you have seen our work when you came into the city,” Sinichkin says with a wry smile. The gang claim to have set up five or more road blocks to police all traffic entering Sevastopol city. They say they are being supported by other ad hoc civilian defence units that have sprung up over the last week.

Vladimir Putins motorcycle gang is riding into Ukraine
Here comes the cavalry. As Moscow weighs how to handle the political situation unfolding in Kiev, Vladimir Putins motorcycle gang, a group named the Night Wolves, whom Putin has called his brothers, is wasting no time making their allegiances clear. The group is staging a ride across the border into Ukraine to rally pro-Russian protesters.
As Ukraine transforms itself in a new era, all eyes have been on Russia to see how strongly Putin will try to strong-arm the nation back under the control of Mother Russia and push it away from European integration. Ukranian president Viktor Yanukovych fled to Russia and the Kremlin is thought to be harboring him. And Putin has said it has yet to decide whether to withhold funds from the countrys new leadership.
The move by the Night Wolves is the latest sign that Putin intends to apply some muscle to keep Ukraine under Russian influence. Alexander Zaldostanov, the groups leather-clad, pony-tailed leader nicknamed The Surgeon, said, Tomorrow people are organizing an action called Russian Spring.
Last year Putin personally awarded Zaldostanov with a state honor after he and his crew helped restore a monument symbolic of Soviet war heroism in Volgograd, reports AFPthe same city where separatist suicide bombers killed 34 late in the same year.
The column will start at 8:00 am and ride across the whole eastern part of Ukraine, Zaldostanov said.
Zaldostanov said he was personally going to Crimea, an area that has emerged as critical in the unfolding conflict, with many residents loyal to Ukraines ousted leadership. Zaldostanov said he was going to deliver humanitarian aid.
The Kiev branch of the Night Wolves writes that their mission is to spread Russian influence around the world.
