Years ago I read about the following incident as related by an American POW who did time at the Hanoi Hilton, and had the additional misfortune of having been visited there by voracious starlet Jane Fonda. I had no trouble googling for this story just now, and found it at http://www.snopes.com/military/fonda.asp

“From 1983-85, Col. Larry Carrigan was 347FW/DO (F-4Es). He’d spent 6 [product] years in the Hilton — the first three of which he was listed as MIA. His wife lived on faith that he was still alive. His group, too, got the cleaned/fed/clothed routine in preparation for a ‘peace delegation’ visit.

“They, however, had time and devised a plan to get word to the world that they still survived. Each man secreted a tiny piece of paper, with his Social Security number on it, in the palm of his hand. When paraded before Ms. Fonda and a cameraman, she walked the line, shaking each man’s hand and asking little encouraging snippets like, ‘Aren’t you sorry you bombed babies?’ and, ‘Are you grateful for the humane treatment from your benevolent captors?’”

“Believing this HAD to be an act, they each palmed her their sliver of paper. She took them all without missing a beat. At the end of the line and once the camera stopped rolling, to the shocked disbelief of the POWs, she turned to the officer in charge ... and handed him the little pile of notes.

“Three men died from the subsequent beatings. Col. Carrigan was almost number four

The Snopes article, if it is to be believed, debunks the story of Fonda handing over notes from the POWs to their Commie captors and the POWs’ subsequent beatings.

Even on this thread and others like it, a point such as the on you are making, will be met wit resistance of much stronger language and adamacy than the posts relevant to the title and article

I’ve come to not state the case any longer. Tgere is so much refutation of it on the Internet

I have met these men on a number of occasions and they tell the story of Fonda just as you tell it. They tell it with passion and in a group, allowing any one of them to refute it. No one ever does. Nor do their families

And this is in the same space as a museum, displaying prison paraphernalia

Btw these fineness suffered so much you can see it, their wives waited years just to find out whether or not they were alive

Fonda could have given them that information. It’s a fact that she did not.

I will get flamed now so will you

But as far as I’m concerned you can believe that story

I won’t ask these guys next time I see them if they lied about the story

Anyone who suffered near death strung up rolled up forced to watch their friends die, to eat urine, cannot have any vice such as dishonesty left in him
