This of course will sound like “heresy” the best replacement for the 1911 was done back in the mid 1942.
For the most part few people are good enough with a hand gun to rely on it as a combat weapon, ergo the M1 carbine was created. Yes it was not a great rifle (compared to the M1 Garand esp) but as a replacement for pistol it was excellent imho.
I have one of those. It is easy to shoot well and especially good for people like my wife and her friend because of the low recoil and noise compared to other rifles.
