Those who lollygag in the left lane of highways and interstates could be ticketed under legislation approved in the state House on Wednesday. House Bill 459, by Rep. Bill Hitchens, R-Rincon, was approved 162-9.
The bill makes it a misdemeanor for any driver on a divided highway who does not move to the right when a car going faster approaches from behind.

I’m still pondering the sublime implications of the remarkable proposition that someone driving the speed limit can be considered reckless.
Nothing like gently flicking off the cruise control when a tailgaiter gets too close — and watching that speedometer needle slowly, almost imperceptibly creep down one sweet mile an hour at a time.
I doubt slow driving in general leads to more accidents than fast driving.

The number one cause of accidents is right of way violations, number two is DIFFERENTIAL of speed, which CAN be caused by a slow driver in faster lanes.

California has the same law for all vehicles, Must Use Turnouts and allow passage.
It is NEVER enforced, unless a cop is in the lineup.
If you are in the fast lane moving slower than the flow of traffic, even if you are at the speed limit, you are creating an unsafe condition. And being a passive-aggressive Barney Fife-wannabe is not really where you want to be, is it?

The de facto speed limit for the far left lane on metro Atlanta highways seems to be 80, from what I can tell. Do you know of anyone getting a ticket for less?

I'm not favoring that, I'm just saying slower driving in general means less accidents and fatalities than faster driving. That's obvious. I live in Wisconsin, and one of the chief causes of winter accidents is driving too fast for conditions.
And everybody knows about the dangers of speed and alcohol. Like I said, if the roads and cars are well engineered, I don't care what the speed limit is if it doesn't cause an undue amount of accidents and fatalities.
So you’re saying careful drivers are borderline fascists. Nice. Look amigo, if you live in the part of the country where it’s thinly populated and you want to drive 200 mph, I don’t care. But there are other people on the road. If your attitude is that rules are only for other people, maybe you’re not on the right forum. The “I can break the law whenever I feel like it” attitude is what separates civilized people from psychopaths. Not saying you’re a psycho, but you’ve got the kind of screw-everybody-else thinking I like to avoid.
This thread is fairly entertaining so I'll try to do my part. How about we all throw some bucks to our host so we can do it again next week.
I worked with a guy that had a most weird way of asserting his control over anybody. And he kept score. He bragged about it.
His commute to work was 10 miles of two lane and his objective every day was to score a larger line of cars stacked up behind him. He would leave at various times and poke along until someone would catch up, then he would speed up just enough to not justify a passing, then as cars began to accumulate, he would speed through the passing zones and slow way down through no passing areas.
I ride a bike, drive a sports car, tow with and drive a 6800lb pickup. If your blocking my progress in the left lane it's any easy fix.
If I'm on the bike it's tap down, check for road debris on the shoulder or between the side by side morons, blip throttle and dust you off. Yeah I planned to scare the crap out of you.
The sports car requires a little more finesse. You'll swear I cut you off when I get 1/2 a car length in front of you and I'll know I was accelerating and had at least 1/2 inch of room on the rear side marker.
I tend to keep the truck going with the flow of the right lane, particularly if towing something. If I'm towing and stacking cars behind a tow it's time to pull over and let them go.
I've been on the enduro in a traffic jam and made my own road.
A considerate and polite thing to do is not impede others as often as possible. That's also a prudent way to behave. We seem to loose our humanity in cars. That freakin' Buick, that dang truck, that speeder, those head lights! That is the path to road rage and controlling behavior.
I drove 10 service vans to 100k and the last to 30k. That plus my personal miles says a bit about my practice at the thing we call driving.
Totaled the sports car once, completely my fault for pulling left across two lanes of traffic. Never a scratch or a dent on anything else. Just move the heck over when possible and try not to feel smug about doing the speed limit. Your right to the left lane ends at my front bumper.

From a Physics standpoint that is certainly true, but we have human nature involved here. In California, motorcycle lane splitting is allowed only with a low differential of speed (15 MPH). You split 15 MPH traffic at 35, you can get tagged under the speed limit, and likely get dead from being too clever by half.
Many states do not allow lane splitting at all, because of the wiggle room it gives bikers on differential of speed, at lower road speeds.
