You quite right. However, with the ability of sensor equipped drones spotting a wood burning fireplace will be relatively easy. Then they will be at your door with warrant in hand and a dozen storm troopers. They may even treat burning wood as they do growing pot and confiscate your property with out a trial.

In the island villages in the Aegean Sea of Greece...the villages would make their stone walled houses in the mountains with stone chimneys running horizontally and then upward to dissipate the smoke..
the idea was to prevent pirates from identifying the village from the sea.
