.308 winchester is OK for long range shooting. It definitely works out to 1,000 yards and beyond occasionally but there are many rounds that are superior. For example, I was never a big fan of the .243 winchester until I came to find that it is actually superior to the .308 for long range precision marksmanship. 7 mm projectiles tend to offer superior ballistic coefficients and better long range performance to .308 as well. Then there’s the mighty .338 lapua or the 338/378 weatherby magnum both of which are readily available to the civillian marksman and fully capable of hitting targets very hard beyond 1 mile with the right optic set up and shooter.
Yep and do not leave out the 300WIN Mag or 338WIN Mag. Both will have superior terminal ballistics over the 308WIN. BUT, I love my 308 as well for out to 1000.
