Last week Samantha Power, who once discussed invading Israel and now serves as Obama's Ambassador to the United Nations, decided to use the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by the Red Army to link it to the Syrian Civil War: "In 1945, Russian soldiers liberated Auschwitz. Sixty-nine year later, if the United Nations is to live up to the noble purposes for which it was founded, the world again needs Russia to use its influence."
The theme of being liberated by communist forces is apparently also haunting The New York Times writers: "The Congressional Budget Office estimated on Tuesday that the Affordable Care Act will reduce the number of full-time workers by 2.5 million over the next decade. That is mostly a good thing, a liberating result of the law."
Rejoice, comrades! The Red Army has finally come to liberate you from the shackles of capitalist employment! The ACA, erroneously known as Obamacare, but recognized by the Party as the Affordable Communism Act, is only a tool - a weapon, if you will - a fiery sword in the mighty hands of the Red Army warrior.
But, as we all know, the Red Army doesn't liberate one thing like your employment and then just goes away! There's a lot more to liberate here, comrades - your wealth, schools, religion, sexuality, firearms, and even your sanity!

Ask the Poles how it felt to be “liberated” by the Red Army. I think the saying they used in 1939 was “with the Germans we lose our country, with the Russians we lose our souls.”
.....Yet real liberation came one November night way back in 1989 with the fall of the infamous Berlin Wall.
I know a lady who was a little girl in Latvia when the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact broke down.
Her parents had to make a decision on whether they wanted to raise their children under Hitler or Stalin.
They chose Hitler. They were guest workers in Nazi Germany until an RAF raid leveled their home. They ended up in a refugee camp before eventually coming to America.
Can you imagine being her parents faced with THAT choice?
Obviously they thought Hitler was the LESSER of the two evils. Hard to even wrap your head around that.
aka - Out of the frying pan in to a bigger frying pan.
There’s a scene in the movie “Europa, Europa” where Poles and Jews are fleeing eastward to avoid the Nazis.......across the river they find out the Soviets have invaded from the East, the Poles immediately turn around and head back West, while the Jews continued to the East.
Communism -— terrible system!
We agree!
World War 2 casualties:
Soviet Union — 21,800,000 to 28,000,000
United States - 418,500.
How many of the Commie numbers were mass extermination and not due to the war?
No one knows what the actual deaths due to Stalin forced subjection was. But is was HUGE.
yes indeed.... Stalin killed many, many people (mostly before the war).
we are told that the range given for Soviet Union deaths during WW2 is due to the fact that the war was fought on its territory...with many civilian deaths ... not only Red Army fighting casualties....
The soldier deaths are well recorded, accurate. The civilian death data had to be estimated (such as when the Germans came through with their infamous death squads and just rounded up people, shot or gassed them, and threw them in holes in the ground).
Gee, maybe if Stalin hadn’t signed the Non-Aggression Pact with Hitler and agreed to carve up Poland, they wouldn’t have even had the war in the first place, and lose 20 million people.
Considering the Soviet Union’s complicity in starting WWII......
yes indeed (Stalin’s generals told him the Red Army was still weak not ready to fight, and they were right...).
Similar could be said about Chamberlain in UK (made an appeasement style deal with Hitler...his military was not ready for a major war, either)
...and the results were tragic in both instances.
Hitler would not have attacked Poland in ‘39 unless he was certain the Soviets wouldn’t respond.
But Stalin wanted war between Germany, France and Britain, thinking their armies would beat each other to a pulp, leaving the Red Army the only ones standing in the end.
But then Stalin didn’t think France would fall in six, short weeks.
In an ideal world, we could feed the politicians, senators, presidents, premiers, tsars, Dear Leaders, and commissars to the lions.. Great entertainment... and there’d be no more wars.
It was one of the great ironies of World War 2. Stalin was being courted by the western allies, but he got the distinct impression that the allies wanted sit out the war behind the Maginot Line, and defeat Hitler with copious amounts of Russian blood. And I think that wasn’t just the usual Stalinesque paranoia; it’s actually what the British and French planned on doing. So Stalin cut his deal with Hitler, and agreed to carve up Eastern Europe in the Secret Protocol to the Non-Aggression Pact. He believed that the Germans, French and British would exhaust themselves in a long war, allowing him to clean up in Europe at little cost to himself.
At the very least, he thought the Pact would buy him the two or three years he needed to get the Red Army in shape to fight the Germans. Instead, as you noted, the French caved quickly, the British retreated to their island, and left Stalin alone to face Hitler with an army he knew wasn’t ready to fight. But he didn’t have much choice in the matter by June 1941; he had to fight with the poorly trained, equipped and led army that he had in 1941, not the one he planned to have by 1942. The army he had was necessarily going to suffer huge losses.
And so it happened that Hitler had to be defeated at the cost of copious amounts of Russian blood. The very thing Stalin wanted to avoid, he guaranteed would happen.
Hitler’s big mistake was not taking advantage of the opportunity to divide and conquer the Russians. The first goal of the German invasion should have been to destroy the Soviet Leadership. Stalin was on the ropes and Hitler let him off the hook. If they had managed to take Moscow, I don’t know if Stalin politically, or literally, survives. I think someone like Khrushchev, who wasn’t a big fan of Stalin’s leadership, could have organized a coup to remove Stalin. At the very least, it could have formented chaos in the Soviet leadership and a power vacuum, which the Nazis could have easily exploited.
If the Nazis hadn't been so religious about racial superiority and had treated the Ukrainians like potential allies instead of slaughtering them the Ukrainians would have joined the Nazis to march on Moscow to depose Stalin. Hitler and the German army apparently never read about Cortez and how he used non-Aztec tribes to conquer Tenochtitlan.
While I agree that the Germans could have defeated the USSR by casting themselves as liberators in Russia, that scenario violates Henkster’s Law of Alternate History. The Law states an alternate historical sceanrio isn’t valikd if it calls for the Germans to not be the Germans and Hitler to not be Hitler. For Hitler, Operation Barbarossa was always meant to be a war of racial and national extermination. There was no room in his outlook for the Germans to be liberators. And that’s how the Nazi state and German Wehrmacht rolled in regard to the peoples of the USSR. Hell, the Germans own allies, the Rumanians and Italians, got treated like dirt.
I suppose in the end thank God HItler was Hitler, and it might have been a good thing he survived Valkyrie. Heaven forbid if the Germans had someone competent running the show at that point.
