Russian police detained gay rights activists who tried to protest on Moscow's Red Square and in St Petersburg on Friday, shortly before Vladimir Putin opened the Sochi Winter Olympics, gay rights activists said.

Police in Moscow and St Petersburg did not immediately comment on the reports by the gay activists, who said 10 protesters were detained in Moscow and four in Russia's second city.

A list posted by one rights activist on Facebook said two of those detained in Moscow were women from Sweden.

In St Petersburg, the protesters were detained after unfurling a banner declaring "Discrimination is incompatible with the Olympic Movement", gay rights group All Out said.

It all comes down to how you view things. Are there some ideas and movements that pose existential threats to our society? If you say no then you have no problem with the “fundamental transformation” of Europe into an Islamic stronghold. Likewise with us becoming a barren wasteland of contraception, abortion, euthanasia and non-procreative deviant sexual practices.

Why won't you answer the question, Balding? Too hot for you?

It’s very possible.

What am I overlooking? Why should I trust the government & its police to regulate good speech and bad speech?

Because since the promotion of homosexuality is now legal, it is everywhere and being forced upon us by the government. "Senstivity" training, faggotry being a "civil rights" issue, kids learning it in schools, and homos in the military are some of the results. If it's legal, this is exactly what happens. Was anyone damaged when it wasn't legal? No.

I hear you! I find myself in that type of mood 10 times a day. I most certainly distrust government. After all it is brute force. Insofar as government is a reflection of its people we’ve definitely gone beyond an electoral solution. We’re a divided nation and ultimately the only solution is war, I believe. We can’t be so divided on fundamental principles and survive.

Fluffy has been escorted from the building.

Hopefully you will be soon as well.

Well, that JRs right. I've been his guest since at least 1998.

Seems ironic doesn't it?

You propose seeing me get escorted from Free Republic for promoting free speech as a way to promote continued freedom for everyone, and you stay for promoting censorship.

Somehow, I don't see that happening.

How have our freedoms increased or even stayed the same, since the promotion of homosexuality, bestiaility, pedophilia and incest is now legal? It's obvious to any rational person our freedoms have been severely curtailed. Only sick perverts now have the freedom to recruit the young and impressionable, and infect the social body at large.

.....”What they are campaigning for may not be a human right but that speech aiming to change the law is”....

There right to speak about sexual behavior does not give them the right to silence those who object to that behavior....which is what their aim is.

You have made the fundamental mistake thinking that one is the cause of another.

It is not. The cause is the drifting from our roots in Christianity.

It is from that drift that the promotion the evil of homosexuality etc. gained foothold.

Legal measures will not stop the drift, but rather will increase the intensity and speed at which our societies degradation will occur.

They were told by the authorities that if she did not go, CPS would take her away from her parents.

Yes, I've heard of that kind of thuggery too---using Social Services to enforce the vile values, or anti-values, of the day.

As JPX2011 pointed out above, it's probably long too late for what he termed "passive" resistance, which I guess I would describe as family & community solidity, private schools, battling at the ballot box and so on.

In my daily life I push back hard, where I shop, where I worship, the events and activities I support. And yet we lose ground constantly owing to the efforts of the media, schools, universities in particular, and the leftists everywhere.

My queries to you, Trisham, Catherine and others flow directly from the heavy, misguided hand of government that we see in place now. It is difficult to imagine a righteous, judicious national authority anymore.

But in my heart I also know the truth of what JPX2011 said in conclusion: We are a divided nation, and the only outcome can be war.

I agree Jeremiah....you're assessment is absolutely correct. We see it constantly in our educational systems, government and on the street...it IS an infection which will destroy this country already sliding into decay.

When the founders wrote the Bill of Rights, free speech was not meant to include promoting depravity and gross immorality. And that is the way it should be - the way they intended.

Were it not for recent penumbras, I think the Russian gay propaganda law would be constitutional in the U.S. That's only after reading summaries, of course. Government has a legitimate right to restrict free speech, in this case to protect children. The issue may not be that complicated, however, since these two groups probably never applied for a permit and just occupied the sidewalk.

Fightin Whitey, not a single soul has proposed locking anyone up. Russia sees the depths of depravity to which this country has fallen by humoring queer advocates. We don’t have the right to dictate to them how to handle the problem. That’s what we are saying here.

I disagree with you when you say there’s no point in calling out the homo speech police. We should have started out opposing the homo rights movement with everything in us, speaking plainly about the filth and sickness involved in their practices. It’s not pleasant, and in fact can be downright ugly, but that’s because the acts themselves are ugly.

Kids have grown up thinking that “love is love”. We need to pull the curtain away and expose the fact that homosexuals are not just benign, swishy shopping buddies and hair stylists.

Yes. Wouldn't it be fun if life weren't sometimes so serious? Unfortunately, life can be difficult, dangerous and unpleasant. Ignoring the truth won't make the world a more beautiful place in which to live.

It really won't, Trisham. You're exactly right.

For my own sanity I have to make sure that things aren't always serious in my life. A good laugh does wonders for the soul. I highly recommend the Friday Silliness thread! ;)
