My goodness, it’s obvious that you’re not too into sports, especially football. That’s fine - to each his/her own. Some of us are.
I’m certainly not calling them heroes and I don’t think we’re worshiping them (I only worship God). It’s simply a celebration of their win.
I do know real heroes - my dad was a lifer in the AF, served in 3 wars and I have numerous family members and friends that were in WWI, WWII, Korea, or served in the states (including in the missile silo). In fact, a AF pilot I was dating years ago was killed in a plane crash. We have several bases (Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force) not far from Seattle and we honor our troops in other ways.
This city (in fact the entire state and a good portion of the NW calls the Seahawks their football team, including Sarah Palin) has been waiting for a SB victory for 38 years. We’ve only been once before and lost.
I see nothing wrong with celebrating their victory (SOP for other teams that have won). And, BTW, the Seahawks are paying for the entire thing, including pay for the extra policemen. They’ve also asked the WA National Guard to participate and the guard was really happy about it.
Lastly, many of the Seahawk players and staff do a lot of community service, much of which isn’t hyped in the media and/or for photo ops. There are also quite a few religious guys on the team, including our QB, Russell Wilson.
Best,
SC
Enjoy your celebration! From a Steelers fan. (We won’t go into THAT right now ! )
For you, maybe. But for many, sports is a religion and players are gods.
In professional football, the worship services are always on Sunday.
The word "fan" is just an abbreviation of the word "fanatic".
Would your city give a parade in honor of Jesus? If it was on Superbowl Sunday, would you turn out?
In answer to your question, no I am not a big sports fan. I don't like the atmosphere of professional sports. It is no longer a game, it is a business. There is nothing local about a professional team. They will pack up and abandon your town in a heartbeat if it means more money for them.
Have fun at your parade. I hope it rains.
Congratulations to my Beloved
I have pointed out to some people that the rest of the year, we are watching the Mariners.
On ESPN 710 they are taking calls and texts in from all over the place - one just came in from Vermont. The TV estimates 500,000 on the streets or more. The radio guy thinks it is closer to a million. They plan that the football and the baseball stadium next door (with big screens) will be filled for the speeches (116,000 capacity total).
On the TV after the game there were perhaps 20-30 of the Seahawks that knelt while one of the players said a prayer.
And I think it is fine to enjoy it. It’s been a fun year. And the talk about idol worship - I suppose one runs the risk of that. One of the players when asked about the media day before the Superbowl said something like “This is nuts. It’s not like we are heros like our military or firefighters - we’re football players!”
And I was surprised to hear something that Marshawn Lynch likes to say: “It’s JUST football.”
Starting to second-guess our decision not to pull our kids out of school and make the trek into Seattle.
