I met Pete Domenici right after he announced his retirement.

When I first heard Pete Domenici announce his retirement, I thought this is really bad and why is he doing this. Then I actually met him and while his mind was clear, his speech was unsteady and he had trouble walking and I understood.

We lost that seat and are likely not getting it back anytime soon.

I met Ted Stevens shortly before his election loss and he too was unsteady and I thought “why is this guy not retiring?”.

Last month, I met Cochran for the first time. I will say that unlike Stevens and Domenici, he is not ready to retire. He is physically fit, on top of the issues especially agriculture and speaks well and walks easily.

He seems like a good senator to me.

Cochran wanted to retire. He knew that it would be a difficult campaign at best ( he's pretty much coasted in his previous elections) and there's a good chance he could lose, so why end his career that way, as opposed to graciously retiring, with the good wishes, and good feelings from every Republican in the state.

So why is he running? Mitch McConnell begged him to run, because Mitch still thinks he's gonna win, and he's busy counting votes for Majority leader..

The bottom line is really simple. Our Founders envisioned CITIZEN Legislators and not CAREER POLITICIANS to handle the work of governance.

Thad Cochran might not have achieved the drooling, doddering old man stage at this point, but it is well past time for him to go home. He is the face of the Establishment and that is reason enough to retire him.

We really do need to break this deleterious cycle of CAREER POLITICIANS.

“For The Children”, of course.

It’s not about the way he walks, it’s about the way he votes and spends tax money.

Ref. Post #17: Domenici, Stevens, Cochran...... sounds like FReeper staytrue has a history of rubbing elbows with Liberal Republicans. I hope that staytrue is not a Mississippi voter. I know now why the screen name “staytrue”. We’re supposed to “stay true” to the good ol’ boy GOP Establishement with no questions asked. Well, it ain’t happening and Cochran’s old, wrinkled butt is going down in defeat.
