I met Elway several years ago and spent some little time talking to him and observing him over the course of a day in a group setting with other celebs, from sports figures to movies stars. At the time, I (not being any part of "sports fan") had not the faintest idea who he really was except for what little research I'd done on him the night before on the internet. Didn't expect to be impressed; I was figuring, "just another dumb football player."

I was wrong. He was eloquent, clearly very intelligent, had a great sense of humor and even of humility, and a very common-sense way of enjoying the challenge (learning to drive race cars from pro trainers) in front of him. Then and there I figured, "I bet this guy's a conservative." He just had that take, that joyous approach, to life. Then again, I've met several pro football players and basketball players and they were ALL unusually (I thought) intelligent and I would bet money, conservative. Somebody who is a human Clydesdale and a world-class athlete, is also probably going to be pretty damned smart, even if his general demeanor is of a big dumb ape!

As a rule, quarterbacks are very smart, or at least the good ones are very smart . Thanks so much for relating your experience with Elway. I'm not surprised to learn that you found him quite engaging and intelligent. Like you, I've met my and known share of pro ball players also, (most through DrO) and all are college or university educated, conservative, and very much 'down to earth.'

Wouldn’t you expect that from a Stanford grad?
