The Israelis have a lot of oil shale. A retired Texas guy who worked for Shells efforts in Wyoming is working on Israel’s shale. He’s doing insitu oil extraction. A pretty benign process. However,
last I heard the environmentalists in Israel are tying up that effort. The same field runs under Jordan. The Jordanians have hired a Baltic company with a couple decades of experience in strip mining oil shale to mine their deposits. I don’t know how far along that is.

Shell recently gave up on their efforts to mine oil shale in the green river formation.
