Should I wait for an updated model?

Non-toy compasses have a dial to adjust for "real" magnetic north (Magnetic declination )

http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag-web/?id=declinationFormId can be used to calculate the adjustment for your location.

No, you should buy a portable GPS unit instead. If you carry lots of magnets in your pockets they'll affect the compass.......
