I was gonna order one of those army-issue compasses this weekend for an upcoming navigation class. Should I wait for an updated model? Non-toy compasses have a dial to adjust for "real" magnetic north (Magnetic declination )

No, you should buy a portable GPS unit instead. If you carry lots of magnets in your pockets they'll affect the compass.......
