The actual name for the thing is an ‘Aerostat’. They were in use for several years along the southern borders, used to detect aerial drug runners. I believe they have been removed from there (WOD must be over).

No, they are still in use. Depending on the time of year there are 3 aerostats up near here in Yuma Az. There is always 1 up all year. Border Patrol and the Marine Corps use it.
