I don’t think that we should be taking unkind shots (even though they may not be intended that way) against this husband. He sounds like he is a stand up guy who was very decent in his treatment of his then wife and supported her and her aspirations as well as he could. I suspect he was very much in love with her—even though that marriage may have been a “one-way street”.
I suspect that you are quite right. He was probably sucked in by a scheming and manipulative personality. Had he known what her true motives were, he may have walked away.
