Actually, in some areas leaving a gun unattended is a crime.

When I take my car someplace to leave it I usually take the car gun out. Although it’s not illegal to have one stolen it is pretty stupid to make it available to somebody.

Some years back, I damaged my Mossberg 500 shotgun while hunting and shipped it to the manufacturer for repair.
They fixed the gun, packaged it in a red-and-white striped box with bold letters displaying the word “Firearms”.
The UPS delivery guy simply left it outside on the front porch steps where I noticed it when I got home several hours later.

In Texas, if you have a conceal permit, you can leave your weapon in car if you cannot take it inside a “gun free” place.
