It’s VERY interesting that Washington DC and its environs constitute a high-income zone, and even those areas a bit further away from DC are hurting.

In general, government and government-contractor jobs pay better than most private sector jobs. And while good private-sector jobs are becoming scarcer, the government sector just keeps on growing.

And many good government jobs go to the politically well-connected.
