In his new book, which has nearly 600 pages of text, Gates takes the reader inside the war-room deliberations of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama and delivers unsentimental assessments of each mans temperament, intellect and management style. It is difficult to imagine two more different men, Gates writes.
Gates left Washington in 2011 with a reputation as a steady, sober-minded member of the foreign policy establishment, who had served eight presidents and was admired equally by Republicans and Democrats. The next time Gates visits the capital, his reception may not be quite so warm. Duty is his second memoir, and this time he cuts loose.
He slams Congress for its grandstanding and gridlock. I would listen with growing outrage, he writes, as hypocritical and obtuse American senators made all these demands of Iraqi legislators and yet themselves could not even pass budgets. He describes members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee as rude, nasty and stupid.
Joe Biden haters will enjoy Gatess description of the vice president as loud, garrulous and obsessed with politics over substance. I think he has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades, Gates writes. He accuses the vice president of poisoning Obamas relationship with his generals: I thought Biden was subjecting Obama to Chinese water torture, every day saying, the military cant be trusted.

Let the liberal media spinning begin.
Obama is not smart. He is a fool.
...there’s stuff in this article that is pure BS
I believe we will survive, but only if we can overcome OBumbler and his Wealth Equalizers.
Tell me it isn't so!
If the liberal media is turning their heart toward Hillary, they'll love the book... we'll have to wait and see.
Why in the hell didn’t Gates speak up then? He had a duty to do so. He failed. Gates was an idiot just as Rumsfeld was. Gates for not having his Generals backs, Rumsfeld for not listening to his. Good riddance to both, they were asshats.
Exactly! I am so tired of people writing a “tell-all” memoir AFTER the fact when they could have spoken up earlier and actually done some good!
Sorry Gates - we all knew Bambi was incompetent years ago. Why should anyone pay money to hear you spout your story now?
You know most if not all of us find our errors in history...not in real time.
It would have been great if Gates had squealed on Obama in real time but it just didn't happen.
Better now than never!
These inside the Beltway types don't know what Freepers know. They are plugged into the game. They play it to stay alive.
When they leave...all of a sudden their eyes open and they see the truth.
Nothing new here.
Not when you hold the lives of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines in your hands. Gates failed to do his sworn duty by not speaking up then.
BTW, thank you for your service to the country, Marine! Very proud of you!
Lately I’ve been wondering if it was worth giving up 23 years of my life. This isn’t the same country I signed up to defend as it was when I was 18.
I’ve been wondering the same thing. 26 years Air Force retired 3 years ago.
There are huge chunks of our society that appreciate your service as a Marine. You are a man among children.
Hold your head high when only you know this.
Stand proud yet humbly! Now tell me that ain’t hard.;-)
Don't ever question that.
Stand proud...particularly when you feel weak!
Joe Biden haters will enjoy Gatess description of the vice president as loud, garrulous and obsessed with politics over substance. Gates writes: I think he has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades.
Gates accuses the vice president of poisoning Obamas relationship with his generals: I thought Biden was subjecting Obama to Chinese water torture, - every day saying, the military cant be trusted.
Agree
Turning back!? Some of them never left!
She Who Must Not Be Named was their first love. The Kenyan has jilted them, so they're running back to her open arms, contrite and begging forgiveness - not with candy and flowers, but with puff pieces and spiked stories.
Watch for the clock to be reset for those halcyon days of twenty years ago.
