Liz Cheney, oldest daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is ending her bid to run for Wyoming's U.S. Senate seat, citing health issues in her family.
WASHINGTON — Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, said Monday she is abandoning her effort to unseat Republican incumbent Sen. Mike Enzi of Wyoming.
Cheney cited "serious health issues" that "have recently arisen in our family" as the reason for her decision.
But her candidacy had raised hackles in the Republican Party and caused a public rift with her sister, Mary, a lesbian, over Liz Cheney's opposition to gay marriage.
In her withdrawal statement, Cheney did not mention those controversies.
"Serious health issues have recently arisen in our family, and under the circumstances, I have decided to discontinue my campaign. My children and their futures were the motivation for our campaign and they will always be my overriding priority," Cheney said. She did not specify those health issues.
She added: "As a mother and a patriot, I know that the work of defending freedom and protecting liberty must continue for each generation. Though this campaign stops today, my commitment to keep fighting with you and your families for the fundamental values that have made this nation and Wyoming great will never stop."

I’m surprised it ended this way. I would have expected the Cheney family (Mother included) to have done their homework and been more astute. Do you have enough widespread support before we get this all cranked up. Is the money there? is the bedrock of support there? Are you able to articulate your goals for your constituents? Liz is a daughter of a VP, who is both famous and infamous for his ability to influence the president of that time. Liz might not feel she has to listen to other people’s suggestions. So there may have been stubbornness on her part, and the presumption that she was a favored daughter entitled to her pick of positions. There was also that public, foolish sister fight on Facebook, of all places, which went on too long and pushed Liz completely off message.
Ummm, Hi! When WILL you be ‘at liberty to say more’ about what really happened? Liz may have lost a lot of credibility from this misadventure. She can recover and try again, but it will take the passage of time, to get that level of trust and excitement back. Sort of like with Sarah Palin.
