So, the Vatican doesn’t even have a good translator? This is straight from the Vatican, not The Slate or Salon.
I learned it as the Great Commission, not the Great Suggestion.
Even so, Jesus commands us to proselytize, even outside the Great Commission.
“And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” - Luke 24 46-49
I would simply add that God certainly proselytized Saul of Tarsus, with dramatic results for His kingdom.
If God does not proselytize, that would mean God would not wish to spread His own good news, which seems to be counterproductive, to use a polite word. Again, it appears Francis has stirred up more controversy, unless, of course, he was mistranslated again.
