I remember that there were ads placed for US State Department body guards in Libyan newspapers, stating openly that preference would be given to gay males. The local guards hired to protect the diplomatic outpost may well have been those claiming to be of such orientation, honestly or not, in fact. It should not be overlooked how such hiring practices could not have been seen as anything but wonton provocation to a large percentage of the local Islamic population.
I'm convinced that when the time came, Stevens (and later his body) was more severely treated than he would've been, had the State Department not approved such ads.
