The insisted the failure was because the women weren’t allowed to train for the standard. They said the standard should be the same for both sxes.

It is the RECRUITER'S responsibility to ensure that the recruit can meet the minimum standards prior to going to boot. The recruit is responsible, as well, but the senior rank is held most responsible.

With respect to "not being allowed to train...", it is my understanding that the female recruits were told to perform their pullups at the same moment in Boot as the men. If the man fails, they are put in remedial, or put into a later cycle in order to bring themselves in line with the requirements. If they fail to meet the minimum, they fail - and don't graduate.

These two women, whom I thank for their service, are part of the problem - they are NOT part of the solution.

How old were they? I submit they were more "girl" than "woman." Only a little girl would perceive the military as on the same level as Community College. (Or little boy, for that matter).
