In Toledo, Ohio, there was a hotel and garage called The Willard. We always parked there when we went downtown. The man that parked our car was named Willie. As a kid in the 50's I thought he owned it. :-) He happened to be black.

We always chatted with him. Mom and Grandma were never in too big a hurry that we couldn't talk. We talked about family and life, we told him how we were doing in school and he talked of his family. I loved him to pieces. In the summer of 1967 we hadn't seen him in awhile. As we were walking to the garage he was walking toward us. I ran to him to hug him, he held up his hands and said he didn't dare hug me on the street because he was black and there were race riots. I was absolutely crushed. I'd known him since I was a toddler. Willie said he still loved me but he didn't dare touch me.

Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Barrack Obama have taken us back to those days but now there wouldn't be a friendship and there are few men like Willie, a dedicated family man who loved his wife and was a good friend. When I was 12, my Mom was pregnant for my youngest brother. She fainted in the classiest department store in Toledo, Lamsons. Grandma called Willie and he came and got us. He drove our car to the store and helped Mom outside. I can't even picture this kind of friendship or a gentleman like Willie in today's atmosphere.

When I was a highschool kid in the early 60’s I played in an otherwise all black rhythm and blues band, and was the only white kid at an after prom event at a local hotel ballroom...

the hotels been boarded up for several years from what I understand but it is no way worse off than race relations back in Flint Michigan are said to be.
