In America, society stigmatizes open racism. A public figure who uses a racial slur or declares a racial group inferior can expect to be jeered, mocked, even summarily fired. Private individuals might alienate acquaintances, ruin friendships, or lose romantic partners by revealing their racismor might not, depending on the subculture they belong to.
Should remarks made against homosexuality be stigmatized in the same way? America is unsure.
Anti-gay slurs are now widely frowned upon. Cultural pressure to favor equal marriage rights for gays is increasing, but Americans tolerate opposition to gay marriage in a way they don't tolerate opposition to interracial marriage.
And what of Christians who believe that homosexuality is a sin that transgresses against God's will and consigns those who practice it to an eternity burning in hell? Is polite society going to tolerate those sorts of beliefs toward gays and lesbians?
At bottom, that is the question raised by the controversy surrounding Phil Robertson, the star of the A&E reality television series Duck Dynasty, who found himself suspended after telling a profiler from GQ, "It seems like, to me, a vaginaas a manwould be more desirable than a mans anus. Thats just me. Im just thinking: Theres more there! Shes got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what Im saying? But hey, sin: Its not logical, my man. Its just not logical.
He also said:
Everything is blurred on whats right and whats wrong. Sin becomes fine. Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men. Dont be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlersthey wont inherit the kingdom of God....

“Why should he? “
Savage’s IQ might, I say might raise by 1 point?
A “non judgmental” society is actually a culture in decline. When the righteous are unable or unwilling to criticize decadence, then rot and ruin follows. “Political correctness” stifles necessary judgement and critique.
Who is Dan Savage.
Leave it go, Atlantic. We need no debates, conversation, or media attention on this. Phil Robertson is a man of conviction and will remain such. There is no need for Phil to debate a no-name Dan Savage to prove a point which has already been made.
They say this because they lost the first time.
Horse hockey.
That’s the last thing they want to do because, as readable as this guy’s comments are, the Bible is very specific on the question of homosexuality and if asked, point blank, to choose between the Bible and political correctness, Christians will choose the Bible. God’s Law trumps perverted desires Aces over deuces. Period. Full stop.
Gays have seriously overplayed their hand.
Who is Dan Savage and why would anyone give a crap what he thinks?
Phil should do nothing of the sort. he doesn’t have to prove himself to anyone, least of all a bunch of whiney liberals that are looking for any opportunity to attack / belittle the man
How would one debate against the Bible or the word of God? I can understand the lack of intelligence on some folks....but they’d want a debate to demonstrate their bogus nature and how foolish they were? It wouldn’t make it any sense.
And debate would settle everything? If so, I’d have Debate TV running twenty-four hours a day and mandate every American watch it.
Didn’t realize we were a degenerate culture; should’ve known, however. No wonder the Chassids believe our society’s ending.
He’s a well known gay jerk who writes a column called Savage Love. He led his friends to create a new meaning for Rick Santorums name (look it up in the Urban Dictionary). He was on Anderson Cooper’s show when Anderson was discussing his 85 year old mother’s sex life. He lectures at public schools. It seems to me that their was a problem in at least one school that he drove straight conservative kids out in tears. Google him.
I’m in agreement. The Atlantic would see it as a way to “straighten out” Phil. Phil is not into it.
Same as Phil is going to ignore Jesse Jackson’s 72 hour ultimatum. What ultimatum? We don’t need no stinkin’ ultimatum.
9 Who is Dan Savage and why would anyone give a crap what he thinks?
Dan Savage is perhaps the #1 most hate-spewing homosexual against heterosexuals in the nation. He is constantly giving seminars at high schools and other forums to normalize homosexuality. He has been to the White House a number of times. He is very bad news.
Don’t know much about Savage, but I’ll keep a lookout for him.
Why was Cooper discussing his 85 yo mom’s sex life? I didn’t think he was deranged.
Thanks. Now I know why I never heard of him.
And door knobs. Don’t forget the door knobs he licked.
Savage is a Seattle based sex columnist whose column appears in the Stranger and other alternative weeklies. He could be considered a radical gay activist but more concerningly, I think he’s very anti-Christian. He was general editor of the Stranger, and the tone was so anti-Christian on his watch, I stopped reading it. He can be intelligent and civil when, say, promoting one of his books on Michael Medveds show, but you never know for sure what he will do. He’s a loose cannon. And since these people have already decided that Phil Robertson is the enemy and they need to make him into some sort of project, I agree that this idea and any like it, is bad. What did somebody say once...when somebody on the left says “We need to have a conversation, they mean anything but.”
Dunno. But it strikes me as bizarre as well. I mean, being a Christian means believing the Bible. That is pretty much the one and only requirement, isn’t it? The Commandments are in the Bible, the do’s and the don’ts are in the Bible. It’s the Book of Books — if you’re a Christian, that is.
A person can claim to be religious, and not believe the Bible is the word of God, but Christians can’t. That being the case, Corinthians is very clear on homosexuality. It’s as clear as any writing can be.
It says no.
That being the case, I can’t understand why and how any Christian or any church can say with a straight face, that gay marriage is acceptable in God’s eyes, and that homosexuality is not contrary to God’s given word. It just does not make any sense to me at all.
So here’s where we get to the nub of things. To be Christian is to be tolerant. That much is well understood by everyone. Turn the other cheek and all that stuff. Live and let live. Do your own thing. All that is fine, it seems to me, right up to the point where they start demanding that Christians change what they believe, ignore clearly written scripture, and act counter to God’s commands as given in the Bible.
No. Not only no, HELL NO! Not a chance. Not going to happen.
And this is why I think they have overplayed their hands. People are now awakening to the pernicious reality of “progressive” penetration and are becoming alarmed. They are no longer willing to accommodate the perverts.
Savage is coarse and a nasty guy in general.
