They are military terms. Direct means you have a direct line of sight to aim at the targets as in small arms fire, tank main guns, etc. Indirect means fired without a direct line of sight to target using spotters or firing at coordinates on a map as in artillery, rockets, mortars, etc. Most of the stuff I have experienced has been indirect fire (IDF).
