It gets stranger. (I noticed your FR name).

GABA seems to determine ordinary wakefullness or sleep. Some people using Ambien (oddly enough, especially in the Kennedy family, so it might be genetic), have experienced extended periods of sleepwalking, and even sleep-driving.

Typically, they might drive a mile or two at low speed, then gradually run off the road, bumping into something, then wake up in their pajamas wondering where the heck they are. Of course, the police test them for alcohol, but come up with nothing (especially odd with a Kennedy).

And now it gets downright bizarre.

The protozoa that causes toxoplasmosis actually retrains the brains of rodents to be attracted to cat urine, something they would normally avoid, so that they are eaten by cats. This is because that protozoa can only reproduce in the intestines of cats.

When it detects adrenaline released because of fear, the protozoa releases an enzyme that makes the brain of its host secrete the “feel good” chemical, dopamine, as well as GABA. So over time, when they are scared, they suddenly get a rush of feeling good, even sexually, while also being in a half-sleep and inattentive state because of the GABA.

So they are retrained to be attracted to that which they fear.

According to the Center for Disease Control: “Toxoplasmosis is considered to be a leading cause of death attributed to foodborne illness in the United States. More than 60 million men, women, and children in the U.S. carry the Toxoplasma parasite, but very few have symptoms because the immune system usually keeps the parasite from causing illness.”

Illness, no. But at least in part, does it control their brains?

Dopamine and GABA are very strong stuff. Remember that Ambien is a GABA *blocker*, used as a sleeping pill.

Before doctors go around turning off lives, when they not only cannot entirely tell is someone is alive or not; or if they might recover, is pretty awful.
