I've heard the plan was to screw this up so bad that we would demand a single payer system. But when the government screws up so bad, lies about it, admits that its screwed up and then makes a series of fumbling changes, who in their right mind would beg that very same government to take over the whole thing?

You are correct. Everything about Obamacare, the website rollout, the ads, the “unexpected” problems, the quick fixes that make things worse is all pre-orchestrated.

When most Americans find themselves without health insurance and are taking to the streets with torches and pitchforks there will be one last fix and it has already been taking shape. The vast majority of new sign-ups are for... Medicaid.

The government, with the blessing of the Republicans in both houses will expand Medicaid to cover all. The sheeple will love it because it is all FREE!!!!!! Except, of course, for those who will be footing the bill through higher taxes but who cares about the 1% anyway?

Once we are all enrolled as a nation in Medicaid the government may now confiscate all that personal wealth and property to pay for the medical debts that were accumulated by the previously-living users.

Voila! The state now owns and controls everything. Lenin is frowning in Hell because he never thought of it.
