So some enlightened officials are admitting that guns *prevent* crime? It's a step.

Are they going to have ammo in the AR-15s? If so sell me some ammo. I have less than 2000 rounds.

Stupid to put them under a thumbprint lock. Locks like that have fairly high false negative rates, which are exacerbated by sweat and speed, both of which would be present in an “active shooter” situation.

And cutting the power isn’t an option, since most locks like this are battery-powered. But since the guards aren’t likely to be able to open the locker quickly anyway, it’s a moot point.

What happens if the guards are killed before they can get to the weapons?

Guns kept in a safe are useless in a school attack.

So someone would need to cut the hands off of a resource officer first...

I believe this is a good idea, as long as the officer can actually run the thing effectively. We’ve seen SO MANY examples of LEOs not being able to hit the broad side of a barn.

Having said that, if an able-bodied person can’t hit anything with an AR, they just suck in ways I can’t begin to describe.

Why in a safe? Buy them slings and tactical vests. Have them carry loaded mags (30 round standard mags). You want a deterrent, that's a deterrent. That says "You start something, you want your 10 minutes of fame? Not going to happen. That guy there will be on you in seconds..."

For indoor school work an AR-15 is not an efficient idea, expecially locked up somewhere. Sidearms on the hip of a well practiced security officer are the best solution. They are immediately available and just as or more effective indoors and certainly safer.

During the Cold War years, one of the US Army’s forward deployed aviation units in Germany had an instance where a helicopter flight school washout took a UH-1 up for a joy ride. He was arrested when he landed and the command responded by locking up their birds while on the ground. Then they had an alert and the guy with the keys to unlock the birds had taken them home with him.

Not enough information in the article to know if this is a good thing or not. If the Resource officers aren’t carrying, what good is it to have the AR-15’s locked up under biometric protection?

The rifles will be kept in safes in school and will be accessed "using biometric technology."

To paraphrase a popular witticism, "When seconds count, the rifle is only minutes away."
