Quite true. Now some large percentage of blacks who “owned” slaves had bought their spouses or children out of slavery and were not allowed by the state laws to free them legally.
IOW, there are layers upon layers of caveats to this entire discussion. And we need to keep in mind the difference in scale between black and white ownership of slaves in this country.
Yes, some of the blacks who owned slaves had bought their wives out of slavery. But there were thousands of black slave owners. Some of them were slave breeders who impregnated their slaves and sold their offspring.
BTW there were 3,000 black slave owners in New Orleans alone.
Maybe when reparations were signed into law we’ll need DNA tests.
