Credit checks are OK on a certain level depending on the job. You don't want someone with really bad credit as a comptroller, understandably.
But driving patients to and from doctor appointments-- I fail to see any relevance. This is an ENTRY LEVEL job which doesn't even involve handling cash.
And the number of people who have had their credit messed up by the ObaMao economy are legion. Mine went from the mid-800s to the high to mid-600s and I'm one of the lucky ones who just had too many bills to juggle and a few health issues. The last time I was out of work was for two months in 2002.

I wouldn’t want someone with bad credit for any job!
Credit is about trusting someone’s word to do what they said they would do.
Bad credit means they can’t be trusted.
Yet someone else got the job, right? Why does the guy who got the job have less of a right to it than this guy? It's the employer's choice.
You're supposed to have an emergency fund set up so that if you face a hardship, it won't affect your credit. If someone did that and you didn't, they deserve a better score and they deserve to be recognized for it. It's a good sign they're better at planning ahead and showing discipline, good qualities for any job.
