You are right there, they are not cheap to buy.
But for medical reasons it has been worth it.
They have been in for nearly a year, so we shall see how long they last.
I've been told by a lighting engineer that the power regulator in the base is the first bit to fail.
Plus they give off heat unlike CFLs.

I do give in and install CFLs when they are in fixtures that are frosted....

Plus they give off heat unlike CFLs. CFL's get pretty hot too. The difference is that the power supply in the base of the LED is what gets hot, and it is the glass tube of the CFL that gets hot. For equivalent light output, the LED uses less power, so there should be less heat as well.
