Though with kind words for Nelson Mandela and for the speeches given at his tribute, the Daily Mail's David Jones reports from the scene that the event was "a shambles" and embarrassing for the late leader.
In a scathing column for the Mail, Jones laments the empty stadium, the chronic booing of the event's host, and the fact that the ceremony -- four hours long -- began 57 minutes late. "Its my view that yesterdays memorial ceremony for Nelson Mandela not only failed to reflect the towering achievements of the man," he writes, "at times, it was a shambolic disgrace to his name."
Jones notes the stadium, home to the last World Cup, was only two-thirds full. Despite warnings of potentially discordant crowds, "we gazed down upon rows of empty seats" and an "embarrassingly poor" turnout. What's more, he adds, the crowd that was there required disciplining as it booed the image of current South African President Jacob Zuma, the host of the event, whenever he appeared on the jumbotron. The crowd also cheered Mandela's second wife, Winnie, more than his third, Jones recounts.
The crowd played a winners-and-losers game with the guests that made the event "almost like being in a Roman amphitheatre" and "frankly distasteful," writes Jones.

An interesting coincidence about the time schedule slippage: not only did the event start an hour late, but that happens to be exactly how late President Selfie was in getting to said event.
Other FAILs of note: the phony sign-language interpreter, who wasn’t vetted by anyone, yet was able to be present on-stage with many world leaders, and the apparent tidbit that the first 10% of the crowd let into the stadium was never security-screened.
What did they expect?
Because Africa.
I guess some of the people who were scheduled to attend had somehow been tortured to death by Mandela Necklace. Others needed to burglareiz Desmond Tutu’s house.
1 South Africa post civilization.
2 What more can one expect at a leftist, statist, Communist funeral in a sports stadium.
3 Then there is president selfie.
4 You couldn’t pay me enough to be there in reverence to what.
You mean the white western liberal lawyer colonization of Africa through Mandela is not popular in Africa? Just like Gandi is hated in India for ushering Pakistan?
My, those ungrateful uncle toms...
That event, with its lax security, was an Al Queerda wet dream; I’m surprised they didn’t act on it.
socialist South Africa is doomed. I predict a combination of Zulus and Whites will take over the Govenment and bring order in a crack down that will make people wish for the good old days.
That will happennto the moans and cries of the Fabian British media and its Alinsky ueber racist counterpart.
I am not falling for another Kosovo or Syria.
This self important fraud was late to a funeral?
LOL
Says all that needs to be said.
I think he had a hit of Choom and was probably a lit up.
Michelle at least acted with some reservedness.
Why is there no coverage of Clinton and Bush detailing their behavior?
The South African crowd cheered Winnie Mandela——the Necklacing Practicioner?
“Necklacing” is the savage Third World practice of horrific execution and torture——forcing a rubber tire, filled with gasoline, around a victim’s chest and arms, and setting it ablaze.
While her then-husband Nelson was in jail, Winnie practiced this most primitive forms of torture/murder known to mankind - apparently there are pictures of Winnie forcing a tire filled with gasoline around victims’ neck and arms.
She had no compunction about doing this——even to pre-teen girls.
So it could be that the antics of President Selfie were perfectly in tune with the seriousness of the occasion.
Na statement from Cruz yet on his part in this fraud.
made the event “almost like being in a Roman amphitheatre” and “frankly distasteful,”
“distasteful” Well, jug ears and moochie was there after all.
“the first 10% of the crowd let into the stadium was never security-screened.”....
Another opportunity lost?
shambolic
soon to be added to the OED...
I found it interesting that I saw not one white face in the seats. Not one.
Did something happen to Nelson Mandela?
“The Heart of Darkness” wins. Again
