President Obama joined lawmakers and former heads of state Thursday in mourning the death of Nelson Mandela, calling him one of the "most influential, courageous and profoundly good" people to have ever lived.
"He achieved more than could be expected of any man," an emotional Obama said, in remarks from the White House, adding: "He belongs to the ages.

This is all he can come up with? I thought Lincoln belonged to the ages. Is it possible for more than one person to belong to the ages because it’s “ages” as in more than one “age”?
Actually Stanton’s quote was re-written to make it sound better.
I sure miss the good old days when people living in this country didn’t worship communists.
What’s her name - Doris Goodwin the historian doesn’t believe Stanton said it - she said there was no record of the quotation until years later.

Mandela was very shrewd, for a couple of reasons. By refusing to retaliate against the white minority, he prevented the mass exodus that occurred in many other African countries following independence, ensuring there would be someone around to keep things running and prevent an economic collapse. Secondly, Mandela knew that taking the high road would burnish his own image and that of South Africa, keeping foreign aid and investment dollars flowing in.
Neighboring Zimbabwe, once the breadbasket of southern Africa, was already barreling to oblivion when Mandela took over. Good ol’ Robert Mugabe and his thugs gave Mandela a textbook example of “what not to do.’

Abraham Lincoln belongs to the ages...the comment made by Secretary of War Stanton as Lincoln died. Nelson Mandela belongs in the ground.

Well do not tell that to Philip Jenkins. He wrote about the massive growth of the Christian in the global south nations, Africa included.
